thats a fair enough reason to overclock, but beware that matrox know their hardware bteer than you and i and if it could take more voltage we would see 250mhz max's out there on the shelves, they have tested the products limits extensively but as long as you are aware of the consequences then its fine.

I understand warnings for new users to overclocking and mod'ing...
But come on... This is abit thick
Do you really think if someone does mod and burn up their card that Matrox will replace it?? Esp with all the thermal mods needed...
That can be the only reason for the warnings, IMO, because that would effect you indirectly...

Why do people overclock? Why do people Speed on the highway??
Do you try and slow speeders too?? or tell them they'll ruin their new car??

Strange for me to see this reaction, after Overclocking on this board is pretty widely accepted, this is just another form...

        two sides to this issue...
        enjoy..

You know the ironic thing is that Matrox went the opposite route Quality over SPEED!

I agree, I prefer Quality vs. absolute speed...

Speed without stability is going nowhere...
Matrox did what they could, the Mod community generally goes that extra mile for a few Percentile improvement....

this overclocking also reveals where the P has some inefficiencies or weaknesses...
Such as the lack of improvement in the Nature test...

Do you know of any company that endorses overclocking or voltmodding for their line of CPU's or vidcards???

That's pretty much the line of thinking that I'm following....

Uh, there are at least a few such companies, especially in the vidcard business: Gainward, ASUS, a whole lot of others who factory-overclock their boards...they know that speed sells and are prepared to take the risk.

Yes, but they don't endorse end-users voltmodding their cards...

hmm they Vmodded it -+ 20%, if you would voltmod it only 10% would that kill the card too?

K63 you are dead right there no company encourages voltmodding but also no company releases hardware running >20% lower than what it is reliably capable of even though speed is a major issue and a reason for tyhe masses not buying it. (and if you say the northwoods this is because 1.) intel needs to protect its profits by releasing many different clocked and different priced processors which joe average will run at stock speed and 2.)a worrying amount of voltmodded ones are dieing)
as for overclocking im all for it and love to see what others can produce but there comes a point when it just seems a waste of resources to go to the trouble building something then fry it for the sake of it.

My thought is that Matrox downbinned the cards due to increased difficulty in getting a huge heatsink on the card and problems with yeild.

Also, with the market Matrox aims for, the cards are expected to last MUCH longer than anything from ATI or NVidia...

ActuallyI think Matrox ended up with the speed they chose, becasue they decided on NOT demanding external power.
The 9700 breed demand power above what the agp standard can deliver.
I do belive that the parhelia could suck more juice, if it too had an external powersource.

Actually I think the chip just can't handle more voltage then it was designed to, as per design, and you'll just kill it. - simple really

I have read some stories about the sudden death P4's
almost all of the P4 that died , had a vmod so that they could do +15% voltage.

luckily my bios limits me to just 15% .

Gotta keep an eye on this thread...wonder how long the Volt modded cards are gonna last
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?
