Read it again I’m talking about Northern slave trade. The salve trade (the importation of slaves to the us was a Northern business witch was why slaves were still used 3 years after the war in northern states, and the war was brought about because the north wanted to destroy the southern plantation system before it could become even more powerful that it was. the south rebelled against the north for this reason. slavery was secondary and just an issue the north could exploit.

By the way I’m a northerner I was born in the us my father is English and my mother is French Canadian. I have lots of friends who are of many different ethnic and racial backgrounds. The only problem I have is the inaccuracy and misinformation being spread by all of the various groups, black groups white groups etc... ALL TWISTING THINGS TO THEIR FAVOR! I hate lies and plain stupidity. Some may call me a raciest when I think we should do away with welfare or more to the point put it back to what it was when the program was first thought of. (a voucher system for food or goods no cash or food stamps that could be sold or traded for what ever. (You got a voucher for food you went to a government approved store and got a pre selected list of food) not walk into a supermarket and pick up t bone stakes you and peanut butter and jelly for the kids, iv'e seen this makes me sick) you got a voucher for rent and your landlord was reimbursed directly.

I despise any person or persons who have no physical or mental problem other than they don’t want to find a job because sitting at home is easier. My father is an electrical engineer he used to work for eb designing nuclear subs. they had a massive layoff. One of his fellow engineers was not called back before unemployment ran out him and his family went on welfare when he was finally called back he didn't go he was making more money in cash and benefits staying on welfare than designing nuclear subs for the government!) Now this is a system that is in a real need of an overhaul.

• It is my humble opinion that we should strive to hold on to our idioms and cultures. That's what makes us human
No, KvH, culture is what's killing us!

Now I do understand your POV (point of view), and I grieve over the death of "culture" as much as anyone born and formed by the values of the Old World... but it's a concept that has passed it's usefulness in today's world.

Look how many wars are fought over "cultural" issues. Look at Israel, look at Serbia, look at California (and their "English-only" efforts), look at this damn thread!!!

Look at the separation and division caused between we humans right here, right now, on the basis of "culture", and what "culture" has "taught" us and "given" us each... and you tell me that it's worth it.

I'm not saying that I want us all to be the same; that's not possible, even if I wanted it (which I don't). And there will always be some "cultural" differences based upon geography; a person finding a way to live in the climate of central Africa will necessarily have to have a different view of the world from someone creating a way to live in Greenland.

But dammit, if it takes the death of "culture" as a dearly-held concept of ego and pride to create a world where I don't have to wake up and fear that this little corner of my world is shattered by anger and unforgiveable offence (as we flirt with in every post here)... then I'll pay that price.

Gladly.

Because I am more -- much more-- than a product of my culture or a tool of it. And I, in my own independent being, would much rather love and enjoy people and their diversity than fight with them.

About anything.

• There you go merchant2112.
We agree on cashless welfare. (Food stamps are just another form of cash.)

However, there is something fishy (so to speak), about someone saying they make more on welfare than they do designing subs. Welfare ain't that great.
The biggest flaw in the welfare system is the way it treats the medical insurance of kids. The first thing that happens to your family if you take a job while you are on welfare is that your kids loose their healthcare. Not many people working their way off of welfare get a job with health insurance right off the bat. My sister was in this position, and it was realy tough. She did succeed though.

Holly, As trends are going now, soon the world will be full of beige babies and people can shift their focus from race to culture. The sooner the better for me.

• I do not think if someone prefers to be amongst "his own kind", he is racist. A person to me is racist if he thinks that people of another race are inferior or should not be treated as equal. I can trace my ancestry to Ireland, India and West Africa, as well as the Middle East, although America being the place it is I am "Black" whatever that means.

• Well, Chuck, it's a start... but what will probably happen is that as the proportion of "beige babies" increases, people will cling to culture even more fiercely to distinguish themselves.

Apparently a huge number of people feel that if we distinguished ourselves by our independent beliefs, actions, and contributions to the health and well-being of our communities, they would come up short, or something.....

And Denty... your guess is as good as mine .

• "No, KvH, culture is what's killing us!"

No Holly I have to disagree. I feel that it is our lack of culture as Americans that is tearing us apart. We are each trying to find his or her own idenity and we are looking outside of the great country of the USA for it. Yes she has her problems but think of some of the alternatives.

• Even our current welfare system is designed to enslave a large group of the population. It's almost a all or nothing situation. If you don't work you have all these benefits given to you but if you work, even at a minimum wage job, you lose them. So in today economy what choice to some people have.

I would like to see us go back to a time when working hard meant something and a man's word and a handshake was more binding than any written contract. Where woman were considered ladies and men were gentlemen. And I don't mean that in a sexist way. I hold great pride just in holding open a door for a lady, no matter what the color of her skin.

That is part of what the true southern initiative is. It is not about bring back slavery. If anything it is about trying to break the binds that enslave us today.

Btw, the original sun symbol was drawn the other way round, clockwise, that is...

• There is a difference between the swastika and the Confederate Flag. Under the swastika the Germans united together to cleanse their people and lands by commiting genocide on an entire group of people(the Jews). But under the Confederate flag the southerners were banded together to preserve the institutions that they held dear not to commit genocide againist the slaves. So when the skin-heads use the confederate flag as a symbol of hate then it is being used improperly and contary to how most Southerners feel.
