      The original question again?

I was wondering if the rest of the world has had a 50-70% rise in gas prices this year or has it only been here in the US?

LAMFDTK, it seems that no one wants to reply to your starting question.

Here in Italy it has gone up of about 15%.
But it's however a percentage that shows nothing, for me.

Petrol prices here in the UK have been going up and up over the last year, rising about 15%. They dropped about 10% last week tho, but are still incredibly high.

There are ongoing investigations into the prices of new cars here, as it is so often cheaper to go continental europe, pay extra for a RHD car, then pay import charges and tax on the car here, and it still works out between 10% and 20% cheaper than buying from a dealer in the UK.

Here in Denmark we pay more in taxes for cars than for the actual car, not quite sure how much, but I think it's 180% of the cars price!

Well in the last year gas prices have gone up about 20 % here in Denmark. That is to say.... the price of the gas itself has gone up about 50 % if we cut out the 100 % (or so) tax that the government puts on it (bastards).

To what CHHAS said about car prices. You are not far of about the 180 %. My car cost 56.000 dkr.($ 7000) + a 70.000 dkr tax ($ 8750) which gives about 125 % tax.

                  And you are still complaining...???

If we were to buy a car from Germany etc... , we would end up paying even more than the price at a local dealer, and better yet - if we even were to buy a used one, the taxes are calculated according to the amount of tax in a new "similar" (read: BMW300=M1...) car with a small reduction depending on the age of the vehicle (totals about 1.5-2times the price of the same car in Finland).

Although, we can still import cars older than 25years, where the tax is based on the price we payed (30%).

                    ehhhh.... Pertti

I fail to see your point. Is it normal for you guys in Finland to buy your car from a dealer in another country or what are you trying to say here ?

If importing the car yourself is that expensive, then just buy it at a Finnish dealer.... or is there something I´m not getting ?

I've found it as low as 1.56$US here in the Philadelphia PA area. Most stations average 1.63$ to 1.67$ though. (87 Octane) I was in Cape May New Jersey for teh weekend and prices there seemed to be around 1.58$ to 1.63$.

Not that either of those are terribly shocking to anyone in the US.

On the taxes thing. I don't know how it works in other countries but this is how it is in the US.
We have a graduated Income tax levied by the federal govornment. We also have a flat(I think, it may be graduated as well) tax levied by both the State and Local governments. On top of that we also have Social Security(which we will likely never see again). After all is said and done I personally have approximately 20% of my income taken every pay period. For those of you who might not know what a graduated tax is, it means the more you make, the higher the percent you have to pay.

On top of that all states except Deleware have a sales tax on everything except perishable food items. Here in Philadelphia it is between 6.5% and 7% depending on where in the area you live. Some places it's as high as 15-17%. When LAMFDTK said that we work for the government here, he wasn't kidding.

                          ChrisB,

The point was that the cars in Finland are VERY expensive, and if we did have a way of buying cheap cars (even used ones) from another country (like in the UK), most of us would get on the first ship or plane headed to Germany to buy better and cheaper ones (even the ones at German junkyards are usually newer than the ones we are using).

                          Greebe,

Some years back, it was possible to bring one taxfree car per family here when you had owned and used it abroad for one year, but obviously the government officials got jealous of the lucky few and nowadays you may get a deduction (max.12000USD) of the full tax, which is 100% of the purchase price+customs duty+transport cost(+VAT if coming outside of EU).
If you get a deduction, you are not allowed to let anyone outside your wife/husband and kids to drive the car during the next three years, or you will have to pay the full tax

The Officials and the citicens here have been playing cat and mouse for years over this, and it has resulted in some really weird ideas.
The custom built pick-up Camaros, Mercedes Benz STW:s with raised roofs, and american station wagons with rebuilt back seats (to make them uncomfortable to sit in), are the first ones that come to my mind.
Utility vehicles (Pickups and Vans of certain weight and cargo area), are not taxed like the passenger cars, but they have a speed limit of 80km/h.

                          Sounds fun, doesn't it ?

EDIT: ...Ian, we work for the government until ~15th of July here

Pertti, doesn't owning a car purchased outside Finland, but owned for two years still qualify for that 30% taxation?

                              CHHAS and others:

I was talking about the way the tax is calculated, not the amount of it. It´s plain stupid having a tax based on the engine cc. So small cars are usually cheaper than in the EEC, but the the others are usually much more expensive.

And I think you people shouldn´t complain about your taxes. I would love to have your taxes if I could have your life quality. I woudn´t mind paying twice for my car if I´d earn 4x more.

The problem with my country is that we have a perfectly IDIOT tax system were all the rich people and self-employees can easily avoid tax-paying. The medium class must support with all the contributive effort. It´s a shame, everybody knows it but there isn´t enough political guts to end it. The declared average income per month of a self employed enterprise-man is 52000$00 (about 232 USD!!!!) and of a 1st league football player (some of it earn about 25 000 000$00 - ~113 thousand USD / month) is mearly 110 000$00 / 500 USD.

Here, people who manage to escape taxes are praised by the society, in there they are denounced and punished.

That´s the difference. For the records I am a doctor, I graduated last year and it´s my 1st year working. I earn 156 000$00 a month. That´s around 700 USD a month. Our minimum wage is around 270 USD a month. Now compare with your wages and see who´s got more reasons to complain.
