A duplex is like two houses under one roof. They look like one house from the front, with two front doors. It's just split right down the middle. It's kind of funny because people actually buy them, but they only own half of the house. When they repaint of put on a new roof, sometimes they can't get the other person to pitch in. What ends up happening is that one half of the house has new paint and a new roof, and the other half of the house looks like it is abandoned. Strange.

Ant,
A duplex is commonly called a 'town house', too. There is an evolution to living in the US. You start in an apartment, a.k.a. a flat. Once you get a real job and can't handle the neighbors, you move to a duplex/town house. A duplex is basically what the others described. In Denmark they are called raekkehus. You take a big house look-a-like building and split it up into smaller houses. You get most of the privacy of a house at half the cost.
Once you've saved up enough, you leave the duplex and move to the burbs (suburbs). In the burbs you get your 3 bedroom house for your 2.4 kids, with a 2 car garage for your 1.6 cars, on a .5 acre lot with a white picket fence and 3.2 pets.

Electric Amish,
Once you've tasted the good life with high speed internet...there is no going back. I have used dial up from home 2-3 times since I lost high speed. I surf at work during downtime, or I don't surf at all.

Greebe is use to cable modem so this is a downgrade for him. 'Townhomes' usually have more than two units put together. A duplex only has two. But what you call them just may depend on where you are from.
Does anyone know what I mean when I refer to a 'shotgun' house?

IIRC, a shotgun house is a house that you can open the front and the back door, and have a straight shot through the house (you can look in the ft door, and see out the back door)Core2 Duo E7500 2.93, Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, 4gig 1066 DDR2, 1gig Asus ENGTS250, SB X-Fi Gamer ,WD Caviar Black 1tb, Plextor PX-880SA, Dual Samsung 2494s

Ant,
Isn't the word "Flat" used to refer to both appartments and town houses in the UK?
I lived in London for a while and saw LOTS of houses like the "twin-houses" described here. "Tvillingehus" in Danish, Jammer! "Rækkehus" is like the English flats, with seemingly endless rows of connected houses.
Talking about being stuck with dail-up, We (me and my fiancee) just moved to a new appartment in Esbjerg, and it will take 4-6 weeks for my ISP to set me up on DSL again. SUCKS BIGTIME! Right now I'm using my ol' trusty (read crappy) 33.6 modem. Damn it to hell! (Sorry, been playing Jagged Alliance 2 TOO much lately).
Cheers,
Jake
