          I don't mean to sound overly-American here, but just exactly what does the Royal Family do?

          It appears to me that they are there for photo-ops, and that's about it. Do they actually have an active roll in running the country?

            Well the Duke goes around the world saying embarrassing things, otherwise apart from attracting a few tourists and the Queen opening Parliment not a lot.

              For some reason these inbreds are very good ambassadors for the UK. Especially on state occassions where they can ponce about in their regalia and talk without moving their lips.

              Personally I think we should remove them as heads of state (if that is their correct title) and take back much of their wealth. The reason I say this is because I dont think that a modern society needs the type of baggage that this family represents. Not only have they helped maintain a class society (which is slowly dissappearing) but were part of the reason Britain found it difficult to re-invent itself after WW2. I feel that it's just another British institution that really needs to die before we can take on our new role in the world. We need to leave the empire behind us and them with it.

              <rant mode>
              I also cringe everytime Charles opens his mouth in public and faffs on about something that 'Troubles' him. Jeez, i'm sorry the architecture is the wrong shape but get real you dinosaur and develop a sense of reality.

              The sooner they retire his father, Phillip the Greek from public life the better. My old man who is semi illiterate can stand on a podium and make less gaff's than this bloke does.

              The only time that the Queen seems happy is when she is with those poxy Corgis. Anyone know how to wok a dog? Come to think of it I've seen Charlie Watts smile more often than her. HRH, Is it really that difficult?

              Not only that but when one of the little twats gets dwunk and fwalls over or smokes some iffy stuff, I get the chance to read pages of it in all the daily newpapers.

              They remind me of the people from the Monty Python sketch "Upper class twit of the year". And they have the bloody cheek to think of us as their subjects!
              Sack the bloody lot of them.

              </rant mode>

              Anyone care to guess which way I voted?

                  Ha! I say keep them.. if you Brits want to save money, start hanging murderers again instead of putting them up in those hotels you call prisons for life and paying THEIR upkeep.. Germany should bring back the Kaiser too.. though France should stay a republic.. more suited to their character for one reason or another.

                  I might cut back on the royal's allowances, but this is your heritage! Only the soulless try to trash everything with "in a modern society" quips thrown in.. What exactly IS a "modern society"? From all I've seen of "modern society", it makes me want to go back in time a ways.. when we hadn't sold our souls for material things. The tyrants just wear different clothes.. (a funky sweater and glasses.. isnt that what billy boy gates wears?)

                    Hmmm need more options in that poll. I'd say loose the lesser royalty and keep the king/queen first in line.
                    pull the funding on the lesser nobility

                      You'll be glad to hear that treason has only just been taken of the 'death penalty' list!

                        If we were to get rid of the Royal Family (as opposed to the Royale Family, who are slightly less irritating), think of all those tabloid journalists, photographers and other people in the newspaper industry who'd be out of a job! Fleet Street would go into meltdown!

                          No, we don't want him back - we only had trouble with the last few Kaisers who didn't have anything better to do than starting wars here and there. And we can't go back to the days of Charlemagne - we'd have to occupy half of Europe before and the last time we did that the rest of the world wasn't exactly happy with it
                          As for the Royals: I don't care if Britain is a monarchy or not - that's not my business. So I won't vote on this poll and get back to work instead

                            Hello KV
                            You are right with your post. However the British have been in a sort of limbo for the past 50-60 years. Many people in Britain were born in the aftermath of the empire and its commonwealth and there are still strong ties back to this period. Clinging on to these traditions has done us no good.

                              I just want to say one thing, the death penalty is wrong and violates human rights.
