      eftychi asked;

"Who of you guys that support the death penalty would actually have the guts to do the execution themselves? "

Me for one. In a heartbeat.

And if I find some SOB in my living room at 2:00 AM my trusty 12 ga autoading scattergun and I will save the State a lot money. That is if my dogs haven't eaten him first, and that's a BIG if.

Now THIS is a debate we've had before. Funny how the same people who are FOR the death penalty are those of us who advocate gun ownership and use of lethal force as a deterrant.

If someone has entered my home and threatens the life and safety of my family they had better ****ing well expect that I won't hesitate to off them. End of story.

What has this to do with state sponsored executions?

And what has this to do with keeping our lovely Royal Family?
BTW, they cost the UK a small fraction of the tourist revenue they generate, so they make good business sense!

              *pfft*

Take all their money and land away, keep the "palaces" open for tourists. Same money coming in, and a nice shot in the arm for the British economy in the form of some liquidated "assets".

and then who would we laugh at?

Seriously though, it seems that so many of the anglophile tourists are Americans, who can't get enough of our history, because we have a nice long one. They (at least the institution, rather than the individuals) are an important part of who we are as a nation.

What is valuable to your culture? Where would you be if you just 'cancelled' it?

Tony, nice and smooth way to direct the thread to what it was meant to be.

BTW, I think if I found someone in my livingroom who's ain't meant to be there, that person would be in a big trouble, I would beat him up severely. Heck I would probably shoot him if I had a gun, BUT I don't have a gun.

                  Get my point???

The 'first line' Royal family cost relatively little. Should they no longer exist, there would be no tourists intrested in the visit. It is about all that the UK has to offer, outside London!. The liquidiated assets, these are almost exclusively land. No liquidity. Much of it is used by the military or on long term lease to tennants. Again no liquidity.

The Duke of Westminster is, I believe the wealtiest Noble (owns much of central London, smart man!), after the Queen, but he is NOT royal at all.

Unexpectidly (for those who know me, I say Keep them!

                      as for the execution issue:

I have a right to defend myself. True.

I do not have a right to consiously slay ANYONE else, no matter what they have done, if it was not SELF DEFENSE.

If a person is encarcerated, they can no longer pose a risk to me, I cannot condone their execution.

Hell, I knew people murdered by terrorists here. I still would not call for those perps to be executed in return.

                      They have mothers too.

Lock them up, never release them, fair enough. Do NOT stoop to their level. I am bigger than that.

Hmm, sell McDonalds to the French, Budweiser breweries to the Belgians, Coca-Cola to the Japanese and the entire American motor industry to the Germans.

                        The result?
Americans eat less junk food, drink less beer and soft drinks out of general principle, and are thus a lot healthier in preparation for refusing to drive their made in Germany cars and walking a lot more.

Only if your point is that you would probably be beaten/stabbed/shot by an intruder who is better armed than you. Gun legislation doesn't keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

                              Oh yes it does!

The numbers of gun related crimes in the UK as a whole, and even in Northern Ireland, (where there is some, limited 'access' to 'shooters') is massively less than that of countries where guns are readily available. I think the only exception is possibly switzerland, where (and I hope someone can fill me in on this) most people have a gun from national service, but the AMMUNITION is tightly controlled.... They have a very low incidence of gun crime, apparently, but that could be to do with the swiss psychie.

It does NOT stop the most determined from getting/carring a piece for a particular 'job', but they cant be casually carried. The average criminal wont carry a gun in the UK for several reasons....

1 Carrying a live gun with ammunition, carries a 4 - 6 YEAR prison sentance. (more if the gun can be attributed to a crime)

2 Using a gun carries an automatic 'attempted murder' rap. That is 6-12 yearsr (I think) but an the Judges decision it can be more

3 Even threatening someone with a replica gun in the UK is an offense which can carry a custodial sentence. (adam Ant (ex- pop star in the UK) is about to find this out!)

You can get a range of these for just carrying a gun, crims may get a gun for a particular crime, but they wont carry one arround like feckin' Clint Eastwood, its not worth the pain. The average thief just wont carry one. A knife or a sharpened screwdriver - yes, a gun - no
