    Classic lawyer joke:

What's the difference between a dead lawyer and a dead skunk on the road?

    ...

There's skid marks in front of the skunk.

An engineer dies and reaches heaven's gates -

St. Peter: I see another engineer...let me check our records...hmmmm...that's odd...

    Engineer: What?

Pete: I have you down for hell. Very strange indeed, first engineer I've seen go to hell.

Eng: That has to be a mistake, I was good on Earth.

Pete: Sorry, but I have to do what the book tells me.

And so the engineer goes to hell.

Satan: Wow, an engineer, first one I've seen.

    Eng: I wonder why.

Satan: Can't say, not my descion.

Eng: Have you ever noticed how much hell sucks?

    Satan: Tell me about it.

Eng: I bet I can fix this place up rather nicely...

So the engineer proceeds to put in air conditioning, fire extingushing systems, running water, septic systems, etc and makes hell a peaceful place to live. God decides to stop by and make fun of the Satan one day when he is shocked to see what happened to hell. God immediately finds Satan and asks what happened.

Satan: We got this engineer down here a few years back and...

God: Excuse me? You're not allowed to have any engineers.

Satan: Well, too bad, I got one and I'm not giving him up!

God: You better or I'll sue!

Satan: And where are YOU going to get a lawyer?

Okay how about the women who fell over her own child and sued the shop successfully. Or man who sued the police for scaring his dog. Both these cases were won by the way. Should have been thrown out.

They haven't realized yet how profitable it is to sue McDonalds for someone else's stupidity or to get a celebrity off of a double murder conviction.
With respect to the McDonalds... they had been REPEATEDLY WARNED that the coffee & hot water was TOO HOT, yet ignored the repeated warnings. The cofee was so hot it cause THIRD DEGREE BURNS (i.e., skin melting off).

In FACT, during discovery in that case McDonald's produced documents showing more than 700 claims by peopled burned by its coffee between 1982 and 1992. Some claims involved 3rd degree burns similar to the plaintiff, Liebeck.

The coffee was held at 185-F degrees, which causes a full thickness burn to human skin in two to seven seconds, yet at 155 degrees, the extent of the burn relative to 185 decreases exponentially. After the jury verdict, the particular McDonalds lowered the themperature to 158-F.

Read more details in this .pdf:

With respect to representing criminal defendants, it's what our criminal defense system is based upon. Of course, you won't ever see me representing scumbags like O.J. Simpson.

Better be careful then we have anyone in our house and serve them coffee or tea striaght from a boiling or near boiling kettle I might get sued.
It's called common sense Coffee or Tea is hot if I try and drink striaght away ouch. If I need to carry several drinks or several items and a hot drink I ask for a tray if not offered one. I then sit down and wait for it too got get cooler.

And you probably don't go driving off in your car, with it sitting between your legs and then expect it not to spill when you hit a bump in the road. You stated the one thing that case lacked. Common sense.

As for the OJ deal we all know why he got off and it wasn't because of so called police screwups or that he was innocent.

if you put hot coffee between your legs while driving in the first place, one should expect you don't care much about your male equipement! Use common sense, that's why they invented cup holders!

No they would probably sue because it was cold when it should be hot. And with the way our courts systems are they would probably win that one too.

Do you really think that McDonalds suffered at all because of this case?? Hell no. They will just revamp their loses by raising their prices thus it is ulitimately the common sense consumer who ends up paying the bill and suffering in the long run.

And it looks like you're still too stubborn to read. The lady was in the passenger seat, and the car was at a complete stop.

Also, if it didn't hurt McDonald's, then why do you care? If their business practices make it more expensive for you to take your business there, then either (a) you stop shopping there, and it DOES hurt them, or (b) you can continue to support them.

I have no problem with them paying for her medical bills or time lost from work, that is if she did work. But to award her millions of dollars, which the lawyer/s got a big percentage of, for something that was basically because of her own stupidity is just not right.

Of course it was a case of poor little pitiful me againist the big evil corporation.

                          Joel

BTW: McDonalds did offer to do that but some ambulance chasing lawyer convinced this little old lady that that was just not good enough.

Where in this thread was it mentioned before I mentioned it.

The lady was in the passenger seat,
So why wasn't the driver of the car also sued?? No big bucks to be won.

and the car was at a complete stop.
So because she was too stupid to drink out of a cup, especially a cup she knew contained hot coffee, then McDonalds should be held liable for it.

Come on. This was a stupid case and you know it.

Read the link Chammy posted, which seems to be like the one I posted a few months ago.

Her son was driving, and he parked in the McD lot once they got to food. She opened the lid to put in sugar and cream. The coffee was so damn hot that when it spilled it melted the skin off of her legs and genitals. Do you think that should happen?

It's totally ridiculous McDonalds had to pay anything. Coffe is supposed to be hot and everyone knows that.
So you have an accident with the hot coffee and get hurt? Yeah, sue the sellers ass. The "someone has to be guilty for this"-mentality , just that those never realize that it's probably themselves that caused this thing.
So if I buy me a pocketknife and hold it open while sitting in the rear seat of my car, the driver has an accident and I cut my stomach - can I sue the knifes vendor because it is sharp?? Oh, and I'm sure you could find thousands others that cut themselves as well with those damned sharp knifes...

Same as with the smokers vs. tobacco industry. EVERY smoker knows that it's bad for his health, and even if they wrote on the cigarettes "Smoking WILL have you get lung cancer sooner or later", they'd not sell less.
But if/after they got lung cancer someone has to be guilty - just not themselves.
