There is a saying "People without a past, have no future".
History is to be used and learned from, not abused.
Try reading Ecclesiastes/Kohelet (quite short book) that speak to the mind and soul. It's quite a shocking book written by the an old and cynical King Solomon. After all those decades, this book still puts some light over religion and belief.
It's in no way a "jewish" book so it would speak to anyone of western culture.
