as for the insistence that Iraq should abide by UN resolutions..... well if they can do that to Iraq then they should also do it to all other states that are in violation......

and as far as WMD go …. There is no comarison - Saddam- even with 200 WMD launch platforms has no capacity to deliver that level of threat. - to Turkey or Greece - never mind Central Europe. He poses no serious threat.

As for the raids on Hamburg & Dresden, they were bombed at night. Both cities had multiple distributed targets because Hitler had ordered most targets moved to limit damage by further precision bombing attacks (Dresden had been bombed 7 times previously).

Another major target in Dresden was its military communications network, which by definition is a hard to destroy target because it is widespread. Also; it was specifically requested by Stalin that Dresden be attacked in order to draw forces away from the Eastern Front where his troops were being pressured.

In addition the Allied bombers had to contend with the Kammhubber line; a defensive wall consisting of anti-aircraft spotlights, radar systems, anti-aircraft guns and night fighters that the Allies didn't want to deal with any more than necessary.

Considering the above, and the fact that these were night raids, accurate bombing was very tough if not impossible using the technologies of the day.

The one option they had that would assure the desired results in one raid, which has the side benefit of minimal casualties in the bomber crews, was to firebomb; a technique where accuracy is not a primary concern. It worked.

I'm sure the families of the Allied bomber crews and the troops on the ground are glad they did it, just as the families of the troops in the Pacific theater were glad the Manhattan project worked.

Was it horrible? Yes. Did it end the war faster? Probably.
