I can understand the European political stance, both on a governmental and a personal level. I feel that, with all the European wars in the last century, they have a right to be more sensitive to the costs of war.

Also, the Americans are still feeling serious hate as a result of the 9/11 attacks. This biases many Americans' opinions on any country who has potentially or factually helped terrorists.

I hope that cooler heads prevail and there will be no need for invasion of Iraq.

This is the problem with the U.N. We are trying to work through this authority, but what authority does this authority really have? Saddam certainly doesn't respect it, and what do you do when someone has no respect for authority?

Good point. I really think that we handled this all wrong. When
911 happened and we found out who had done it, I think we
should of declared a state of emergency, mobilized our troops
and walked right into the country and seized all the items they
are trying to find now. We have given them way too much time
to do what they need to, and I feel that we are gonna suffer the
most in this war. I sincerly pray that I am wrong, but I have a
really bad feeling about this. Some of my family is over there
right now waiting to invade Iraq, and I sincerly pray for all the
troops that will walk away from this without going into world war
III, but with north korea threatening us, I think WW3 has already
started and Armeggedon is just around the corner

Please Pray for World Peace. We don't need our families coming
        back in boxes.
        Peace Out.

There is no easy answer to this question. Hopefully, the presence of inspectors is sufficient to stop any weapons R&D in Iraq. There is always a chance that Sadam will see that it is in his best interest to give up on his wish for regional dominance.

            BWAHAHAHA!

He's not a sane, stable individual.

The idea that he'll "just give up", whether because of inspectors or not, is just nuts.

Gurm, he doesn't have to give up, he has over 10,000 caves
that spread over 100's of miles, enough shielding for a nuclear
attack, so why is it so unbelievable that he would kill on a
grand scale, Hitler did it, at a lot slower pace.
                Peace Out.

Saddam might be insane but it's difficult to believe that all his "government" people are insane too.

Launching a nuclear or chemical or any mass-destruction attack it's not like pushing a red little button on Saddam's laptop. Like in any "one man" dictatorship there are lots of people around him that are there just for the money and waiting for a chance to get the power.
Those people are not stupid and will first shoot dead Saddam that make their country/money disappear under a full scale occidental attack.

by the way, after the 2nd Gulf war seems to be imminent (2 weeks more or less) the oil companies have increased their profits on a 10% while many other industries have been losing profit due to the market.

and another thought, will all those EU governments who have signed that letter to back the US go to war if the US finally don't launch the attack?
I mean if the back the US idea is because they share that idea, so even if the US don't want to attack those governments should do it. Or perhaps they are just being "nice" to Bush ?

He'll do what is in his best interests? In what way would "giving up" be in his best interests? If it were, he would have already done it. The fact that he still thumbs his nose at the world is a pretty solid indicator that he is either cracked, or doesn't feel that it's in his "best interests" to comply.

                      drslump,

You honestly think that it's not as easy as pushing a button, and that he would give it more pause?

You have a lot to learn. Plus you use the word "occidental" far too much. Methinks perhaps you are an "occidental tourist".

                      - Gurm, making a funny.

Gurm, calm down. Try to back up what your saying with some explanations.

I may not be actively posting in these threads but I shure do read them and it would be nice if we really tried to keep it all clean.

It is in his best interests at some point to comply with the inspectors if the only other option is to have his country invaded with himself being a target for elimination. We are not invading yet. There may be longer before that happens than you think.

OK, so we don't whup Saddam's fat arse.
So we just sit here and pray all day long, and let some mythical deity save us....he saved his son....didn't he?

Why not wait for another 9/11 before going in? I would really love another few thousand people to die before we got to doing something.

Saddam is laughing his tits off. He's managed to get all his enemies to fight/squabble against each other.
We should have finished him off first time round....
