    Has anyone actually seen specs on what speed the core is running at by default? I've only skimmed each of the articles so far...

    I'm guessing though that in good old M tradition the actual core speed will be kept tight-lipped.

      The companies mentioned as partners with Matrox in developing HeadCasting;

      LIPSinc;

      http://www.lipsinc.com/htmlsite/

      and DigiMask

      http://www.digimask.com/start/framed...ameDefault.asp

      are very real players in the online avatar market. The avatars can be either a clone of your face or some "online agent" you have designed.

      The main use is as a very low bandwidth videophone/video conferencing technology.

      Also, try feeding those German sites through the German to English translator here and you'll get a decent translation;

        We only test drivers, not unreleased cards.
        So no...we don't have anything newer than our G450s.

          Haha! Just realised that with the g550 you'd be able to actually see a tight-lipped Matrox rep without using too much bandwidth!

                I still have this nagging feeling that Matrox just sent out all this info to the news sites, so they would post it up and disappoint (most of) us, then announce a GF3-killer the next day

                  I think Anandtech's final words pretty much sum up my feelings about his card. It took them 2 years to develop this?

                  Must have a grand total of 20 engineers over there......

                    I've got to ask you guys an honest question...Why?

                    Why on earth would you buy this thing? I mean, MX level of 3D is a good thing? Like, "here's hoping it's on-par with an MX"

                    Fellas, the MX is 1 year old tech., that is essentially slicing a GTS in half. For the same price, you can get yourself a Kyro2, and enjoy extremely HQ graphics, with significantly better performance.

                    By all accounts, it sounds like the 550 is going to be a tad bit faster than a G400?!

                    I'm sorry, but this thing is bad...I mean, the whole concept of the thing...You might as well call it the...

                    K-Tel G550, with 'talking head' support!

                    or

                    Ronco presents, the G550!

                    I'm sorry, but I cannot even believe this thing! Did nVidia really snag that many engineers?

                        G450 no overlay Video on both monitors and wont be implemented.adn now this......This just SUCKS !!!

                          Rags,

                          So what if they are working on something else. Just how much work would it have been to use a 128bit DDR memory bus instead of 64bit bus anyway and make a useful video card.

                          When are matrox going to start showing that they are serious about the graphics business, because if they arn't, they should just say so. That way I can piss off and not give a damn.

                          I mean really, headcasting!!!. What a stupid feature to waste so much time on. Not only must both sides have a G550 for it to work, but they wasted a precious T&L unit on it. Sure it is a neat hack, but that is all it is.

                          Matrox management has a LOT of growing up to do, even compared to Nvidia management. Nvidia may go around abusing resellers for selling Kyro cards, but at least they know what the hell they are doing in the technology department.

                          Damn I am so disappointed.

                          (this isn't meant to be a flame to you rags, but a serious flame at the management living within matrox, sorry if i got carried away here)

                            Headcasting??????????????

                            My GAWD, couldn't they have come up with something a little more useful than that with all those engineers? I suppose this is just another indication of the stellar "technical marketing" division (of MJPEG driver infamy) that they have over there.
                            Matrox employees: you'd better have those resumes polished!
                            Despite my nickname causing confusion, My name is not Bryce and I'm not a man...

                              Because some of us were really, really hoping that the rumours were false.

                              What I'd really want to see is a Matrox branded speed deamon. Since that's obviously not going to happen any time soon, I'll be going for ATI or nVidia instead.

                              Ofcourse, I'll wait for Matrox' official announcement before I actually move to the "dark side", but I don't expect them to announce anything else than that which has been previewed on so many different hardware sites already.

                              /torsk

                              PS. No, I can't stand the "speed" of my G400 any more. I'm not going for nVidia or ATI for those "5 fps extra". Nowdays, we're talking 30-40 fps extra. That's a LOT, and you really can feel the difference between 25fps and 60fps. Matrox G400 used to be king of the hill, and used to drive the newest games at full speed, but today, it simply can't keep up anymore (unless I want to run at 800x600 or worse, which I don't). For Matrox to be releasing a card on par with GF2 MX is really weird, since it will be outdated, speedwise, in only 3-4 months. I have been a loyal MGA follower, owning several MGA cards and RRs, but this is just so sad.

                                yep, much of it does indeed suck but if it has gf2 mx speed then it will make a usefull upgrade to my old G400. Seeing as I run win2k and have a 21in and 19 monitor this card will indeed be usefull AND it will be the top dog in its category. Now we have to wait and see what its 3d speed will be truly like.
                                However, before people start complaining, they should look at the majority of pc's hitting the retail sector. Most of them seem to come with a Geforce 2 MX. The same market that the g550 will be targeted at and it will indeed be amongst the best of breed.
                                I'm also open minded about headcasting. The Matrox call from now on might be..anyone for some head.

                                regards MD
