My memory is a little rusty on this, but I think Doom's "multi-monitor" was actually multi-computer.
One machine was the host (and the center display), and other machines would be started with "doom -left"etc, and some network info, and they would get the info they needed to render over the network.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

      That sounds a little familiar.

A fourth monitor behind your back for the rear view - now that sounds ingenious

Now you could also suspend a 50 inch plasma screen above your head, and look at the roof as well.

How about another one for your floor?

Then you have 1 screen straight in front, 1 to either side, 1 behind, 1 above and 1 below.

Thats 6 screens. Should be able to do that with two Matrox Perhelia cards. I wonder if they will come in a PCI version?

Ant... I picked up on this a couple of days ago

"Gentlemen, start your (graphics) engines please... "

Does the plural to engine in your sig have anything to do with the new Matrox card?

yep doom and duke nukem 3d, both supported muti moniter(computer) set ups. A few years ago there was a multimoniter doom machine at "The Aberdeen" Pub in Perth.
Was a novelty for a while, I think 3d glasses are more fun than multimoniter in 1st person shooters, but if you got why not flaunt it

PS duke nukem supported 3d glasses and mutimoniter

Yeah, but multimonitor generally sucks when the middle of the screen (where you are supposed to look) is the border of two monitors, and not actual display. But if you can get rid of that annoying problem.....

Doom III with multimonitor support, how interesting. One monitor for first person, the second for radar and third for...render subject nude?

No....I think the idea is more along the lines of panoramic 1st person view, with a res of say 3072x768, for example, and a field of view of 3x whatever the normal FOV would be...

Only plural in the sense of each gentleman having their own rather then sharing one between them

personally i think it might be either an ati or nvidia card. remember JC was very keen on the rad 8500 compared to the gf3, and he might want to make a point to nvidia for not going the right route. of course he may use a gf4, but of course hopefully he will use the phenomenom called parhelia

                            2 things:

                            1. I believe the new Matrox card WILL have triple head, they have the best dual head at this moment, but the competition is catching up and Matrox needs to stay ahead, I also read somewhere that Doom 3 will be presented on a triple head card, or at least with 3 monitors (it was not here and not on the matrox forum)

                            2. I also read in an interview with Carmack that he didn't find the Geforce 4 to be a card suited for use with Doom 3

Well, AGP 3.0 should introduce multiple AGP ports, as i've read, so start saving up for your own Parhelia Cubeview

Guess it would be awesome to create a fighter cockpit with a plasma screen underneath it...

Kinda remembers me of This G550/dual eizo flexscan L675 setup review, wouldn't that be awesome to game on!

Front, left, right and behind views, or was that just front, left and right. Kind of neat but I don't think anything could actually run it at the time and they removed it in later releases.
IIRC it was not just 3 monitors, it was 3 computers, they used the lan for that, you needed a computer for each monitor.

basically multiplay over lan with 2 spectators.
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.
