More seriously, I am very sorry to hear about the layoffs - must be tough for all those directly (and indirectly) affected.
I can't make sense of Matrox as a company. Why go to the trouble and expense to develop something current and competitive, only to wait a while for it to become less competitive and then bring it to market? Obviously cash is an issue here, but then there are ways around that - contractual risk sharing with partners (manufacturing and financial) for example. Oh well. At least I'm in the comfortable position of not needing a vidcard upgrade for a couple of years
Please don't tell me that the driver team for the P is going down the swanny though... that would be bad.

Matrox will always have difficulty competing financially, they are still a privately owned company, ATI and Nvidia are not and have access to larger funding.

Pitou's situation is much different. The chip is all ready to move to the next stage, but this will cost money (and lots of it since they don't have the facilities other chip makers do) and the owners are pulling the reigns in on expenses (witness the layoffs).
Let's hope they make the right decission: either can the project completely and go ahead with something new, or don't can it too long... Otherwise they'll end up with resp. a crippled card, or an underperforming card (compared to the competition).
Speaking of layoffs, more are to happen this Friday it seems. This round is going to be large.
Sorry to hear that (for everyone involved)...

No, G800 was mishandled project from the very beginning. It was actually a play on what the G450 was going to be but ended up missing out because of the time-frame it was introduced. What is interesting is that the G550 core does have features disabled that, had a proper revision been done, would have put it in a much higher class...

Say hypothetically Matrox wanted to make that revision. Would that cost too much? They could make some money in low end 3D. If they made enough, go ahead with P2. G800 was supposedly DX8, correct? SiS/ATi are making money there, Nvidia is making money with their GF"4"MX which is DX7.

I am not here to gain reputation or credibility. I am here to offer news on a company that is not very open to the public. I also enjoy commenting on their state and do editorials.
I am not here to please you, but I am here to offer information.
Pitou is taped out. It is a project of the follow up of the Parhelia. It did just recently get put on the shelf because of other issues. MGI is going through some troubles and it remains to be seen if they will be able to work themselves out of it. This is one of the reasons I have held out on letting out all I know about the chip, which is a lot more than you think and a lot more than what Matrox would want me to know . The fact is that Parhelia as a project was put on the shelf a while ago and was dusted off again, but had features added and deleted. I was confident that about a month ago Matrox was going to move forward with the project and that would set in stone without doubt the general direction of the chip. Now that it is collecting dust, it is absolutely possible that Pitou will undergo more changes depending on how far it is pushed back IF we see it at all.

Because of the nature of giving ‘Insider information’, you obviously can not give all the details without revealing your source or yourself to matox, that is logical.
But you must accept that what you are doing can do more harm than good. You post on a public forum about pitou, that news has spread to other forums and web pages, what are matrox going to do now?
If they ignore the story and say nothing, there will be a continued drop in public confidence in matrox.
If they go public and confirm your story that Pitou is done and has been canned, there will be a continued drop in public confidence in matrox.
If they reverse their decision because of the adverse publicity and do the pitou when they don’t have either the money or its not able to compete with 9700 Pro/NV30 etc, it could kill them.
They are now in a no win situation, news of job lay-offs will only make it worse.
Accept the possible consequences of your actions, and next time, think before posting Insider information on a public forum.

Ignoring stories and saying nothing was never a problem for Matrox in the last few years.

I thinks it is the fact that there are such massives layoffs at Matrox that makes things worse, not the news about it.
I am sure we all would like to see much better news in this regards, but it's interesting for me to read the news from VigilAnt (though it makes me sad).
