Wyoming, that's where my heart is set at indeed. Never been there (did not get anywhere in the US except for Manhattan). Still with about the size of France (well, roughly, maybe extremely roughly) and just about 503k inhabitants, it seems like a dream to come true (also because of the beautifull landscapes over there).

Next time I'll put in a better pic with at least some "aha!" reference point. Sry.
The only part of Wyoming that isn't a barren wastland of ranches, sagebrush and cattle is the western/northwestern most parts of the state where the Grand Teton mountains are. Everything else would drive a normal man to suicide within a week of being there

          • @Jamm: I am going to look for a nice piece of land with a view at some hills/mountains, including a small or larger stream. My intention is to grow trees there. I'm sure it can be found, no?

@FT: Which two? I think KVH simply forgot for a second to remove all traces.

Oregon has the Cascades, good amount of streams and trees grow very well

There are lots of places. Where and how much land depends on how much money you have and what you want to grow. Don't know a lot of European places to do that. I know a lot of countries in Europe require you to have citizenship to own land, but dual citizenship is common over there, so not a big deal.

In the US, the best tree places with hills and mountains is in Washington and Oregon. For warmer climates, you can go southeast to Georgia and the Carolina's. Ohio and upstate New York are good, too. Lots of place in the Appalachians to have orchards (English word for a tree fruit farm).

But the cost to have a large enough orchard in the mountainous areas would probably run several million USD for an orchard large enough to support yourself financially.

                      • Ouch KVH, that is plain _mean_. Have not got a clue, but it sure as hell is beatifull.

I'll get back to Oregon and stuff. Need to review a bit. Mind you, I am not looking to grow trees for a living. It's soemthing to keep me busy. Millions of dollars I will never have, soi it needs to be "cheap", which is why I also thought about less densely populated areas. I think Wyoiming is the least densely (except Alaska perhaps). I can stand a bit of snow and frost in winter, but would hope for an easy climate (say, south-west germany type).

                        • Oregon weather in the valley area (where most people live) gets only a few inches of snow during winters, if any. After more than a few centimeters in a single day everything closes and people freak out . During summer we consider more than 85 F to be too hot. It rains a lot, not heavy rain a lot, but just expect drizzles most of the year. I love it when it is sunny outside but the one tiny cloud above is putting out rain.

East of the Cascades is a rain shadow so it is juniper-sagebrush steppe and desert. I was just out there this summer though, and it was gorgeous.

Along the coast it is usually wet and windy. Hot days out there is 75 F.

What type of trees do you want to grow?

                              • Well, N. Carolina is a but busy: 66.6 per sq. km wheras Wyoming has 2 per sq. km. I am afraid N. Carolina may be a bit (actually a lot) more expensive, but I do not know this for fact. Also, I am wondering whether I risk ending up in a less tolerant society (now this is the part where I am really ignorant), but I assume I would fit less in a very christian society, which I believe the south has more than north (but WY is actually mid-west, no?).

I am not looking to get a living out of it. It's when I retire. It's as a hobby. It's really about having a piece of land to mold. Maybe learning to hunt and get my own food myself (no clue how to process fish, bird or other animals). Oh, and having 10mbps DL of course.
