I don't currently have any firearms. My only weapons are bladed. I currently live in an area that is quite safe. I think firearms are useless except under special circumstances.

      1. Edged weapons have limited range. As such you're wide open to any moron with a hand-held crossbow pistol, much less a gun.

      2. Good for you!! Unfortunately many of your fellow citizens don't have that luxury. As such we respond accordingly.

Gee, I never thought of that.

Like I said, and you apparently didn't bother to read, I have own firearms when it is appropriate. Quit trying to pick a fight or lecture or whatever your purpose is.

I think you are correct for the most part. The strong NRA lobby is another factor.

I don't think that much of the populace has that many guns. I only know 2 people that own them, and I am willing to bet the
more populated cities, the lower the % of people owning guns.

People who respect and own firearms don't talk much about them. They have them for their own individual purpose and, for the most part, keep silent about their existance. To talk about them is to invite theft - and it really boils down to self-assuredness. If you are strong, you don't need to tell everyone, nor pick fights to prove it. People who talk the most about their weightlifting prowess or firearms are a bit insecure.

Byock, I guess my point is that you can't necessarily tell how many people own firearms by talking with them.

Not only are the majority run from homes, but Pawn shops and sporting good stores (etc) are also on this list.
One of the two I counted was a sporting goods store. The other is a hunting store.

And is selling guns out of your house a "legitimate" thing?

It's that age old, I didn't see him, when the guy riding a motorcycle is hit in an accident. Most people who don't drive one don't see them, but once you do, you see just how many are truely on the road have gone unnoticed.
Granted, if I had a gun I would notice them more, but then again, up until a month ago, I hadn't eaten McDonalds since high school - long before I lived in this area. But I always knew of the McDonalds...

Well, I'm a gun owner (1 22 rifle), who is not against gun control and would, on balance, be considered a liberal.

                      Here is my 2 cents:

1, The founding fathers put the gun part of the second amendment in to protect "the people (by which they meant the states) from the power of an out of control federal government.
But, there could not be an armed rebelion in the US anymore because the federal military is just way too powerfull to be defeated by small arms.
                      So that point is moot.

2, It has become a part of our culture. You'ed have just as much luck asking Americans to give up thier cars.
                      So why talk about it?

They should make bullets really hard to come by and really expensive that way, no matter how many guns are out there, without bullets, it's just a fancy paperwight.

@Jammrock: The program showd a clip of Clinton giving a speach on the need for gun control. The quote about America 'having 12 times more gun crime ....' came from him, not some random bloke.

Britain is one of those places where only outlaws own guns.. when one breaks into your home to kill you and your kids with one, you can run at him with your sword while he blows you away. And he probably gets to sue your estate for resisting anyhow (after he does his 2 years for the mass murder of your family, of course.)
