    az:
I mailed Opera with the following question (amongst others):
    -
    > Does purchasing the current version include an upgrade to Opera 7 ? If not,
    > is there any idea what the pricing would be for upgrading from 6.05 to 7 ?

By buying Opera now you will receive a free upgrade within the current series of Opera. It has not been decided if it will be a free upgrade to Opera 7 nor how much the upgrade cost will be.
    -

They also gave me a great tip, regarding a question of me for purchasing both a Windows and a Symbian license:
    -
It is not possible to buy a multiplatform license for Windows and Symbian. But you can buy one standard license and then upgrade to another platform for 15 USD.
    -

I currently am still using the adware version, but with this kind of support, and low prices, I really intended to buy Opera. Only, now I'm not sure if I should wait for version 7...

I think it's relatively safe to assume that the upgrade to Opera 7 will be free. They did this with the previous versions, too - only for the next generation, but I think it'll take a while till they release Opera 8.

At 10,- $ (if you're a student, and you order through their special campaign link I posted), you can't really go wrong, can you? I don't think an upgrade will cost much more than 20,- $ (minus 50% student discount).

dpreview.com doesn't work right with Opera, though I suspect the site, not Opera, to be the problem. Many sites only optimize for IE now (understandable given its >90% market share), sadly.

Yes, that is true... Although the problems on that site are quite minimal (haven't found anything other than that menu). Hopefully version 7 will sort that all out.

I have decided to wait with my purchase, I'd like to be able to test the new version first (I have quite a number of sites that I frequently use, and don't seem to work right with Opera).

The problem would not be the rendering engine, but the scripting language used. If webmasters don't use proper JavaScript, Opera will not work (although identifying as IE sometimes works, since Opera then executes a little ... JScript, I think. Some generic IE scripting language.

Joined the thread late, but just wanted to mention that every time I have problems with the forums lloading halfway or not at all, I disable image loading, and it immediately clears the problem up. I think some of the little icons like IM-online and emoticons are not loading sometimes, and this hangs Opera up, where other browsers would just load the page and wait for the images to download later.

I think the "problem" is just that Opera waits for all images to be loaded before rendering the page at all, under default settings. (You can change that by selecting the image downloading option with a downward pointing arrow). It's simply a design decision that makes it different from the other browsers.

Yep, this has been mentioned somewhere in this thread. Displaying the page with only the cached images (or without images) solves the problem completely.

You can then, after the page has loaded completely, enable all images again. This won't reload the page, nor make it display incomplete.

                    • Hmm, this doesn't always work for me... (sometimes, it's just like I haven't changed that setting; the page just sits there)...
