    Madcat,

I ran into a problem myself with the BH6 running at 1.5 stock voltage with the C2. The thing I did was pop in my old P3450 and set the voltage on my Abit Slotket to 1.8 and then set it in the softmenu at 1.8 with the P3 in. I restarted and before windows booted I shut the machine down and put in the Celeron2. I checked the Bios and wouldn't you know it reported 1.8 voltage. I might push my luck tonight and try out 103 FSB and then 112 to see what she can do. I think I better install MBM again to keep an eye on the temp I gonna generate. I have a neat litte program called CPU test that stress tests your CPU and gives it a rating on how stable it is. If you have ICQ drop me aline and see what we can come up with....

Just an update....she choked on 112FSB@1.8volts and I'm not gonna push it anymore. I don't feel like reinstalling windows again . I'm running 103 FSB for a grand total of 877mhz. Not too shabby for a chip that cost me $125 bucks. Damn sig needs to get updated again....

GT, thanks for the offer, but I think Prime95 is enough of a test. It continuously stresses the CPU, and I think the process is recursive, that is it will quickly blow up on itself if theres so much as one error anywhere along the line.

I used a classic trick dating back to the original Abit BX6 to get the extra voltage, since my BH6 wouldnt let me get more then .2v above default. I set the voltage to 1.7 then flashed the BIOS. Now default voltage is 1.7v, and I can reach 1.9v

Say Maggi, I have a P2B-S also (PIII/450). What does ASUS specify as the fastest CPU they currently support for that MB? Is their a forum where ASUS users discuss CPU configurations outside these specs?

Does anybody have a URL for benchmark results comparing the Celeron, Celeron 2, and Pentium III under various applications and workloads? Including stable overclocked systems? Has anybody determined how much this max overclocking shortens the life of a CPU (I suppose this is highly variant)?

              xortam,
I ran my celery 333 at 500mz for one year at +0.2v and 52c.
It is retired on a shelf right now, but it still works fine.
Even if it craped out after a year it would still have been worth the $89!

Thanks for the benchmarks Maggie. It looks like Intel have done a far job a crippling this processor.
I benchmarked my PIII 650@735 with 3d mark at the same resolution. The g400 is overclocked 116 % using Matrox Tweak.

                  Hi Guys !

                  Seven:

                  Welcome back

A little more cooling and I'll beat your 900 ...

                  xortam:

What rev is your MoBo ?
According to Asus it has to be rev 1.04 or higher, but my 1.02 does a fine job, as you can see.

Asus doesn't have an official opinion an this topic, how could they ?
Regarding the fact that setting CPU Idle to raise its priority at 50°C was enough to crunch SETI @ 952, let's me think I'm close, but my MoBo is sooo old (almost two years) so I guess that shouldn't be a problem.

I found some comparing reviews last week ...
I'll see if I can find 'em again.

Risk & lifespan shortage due to OCing is given, but forget about it, cos before it gets a chance to really fail, it'll be that old that you had another update before ...

Seriously, I OCed my first Cel300A to 464 for more than half a year and that CPU still runs happily at 450 in a friend's rig.
My next one was a Cel333@500 which I swapped in between with a friend's 300A@504 and after another two months we switched back.

As you can see, all above CPUs run for more than a year flawless at 2.2V and at least 50% above spec.

Nice to see you had a reason to spend more money ...

I admit you're still faster, but you spent a lot more money and thus have a right for better performance AND I'm very satisfied with my purchase, because I at least doubled my overall performance and again I got my best bang for the buck.

I'm still using my old PC100 RAM and my PowerSupply only gives my 230W and I'm close to a GHz ... need I say more ?

besides that I'm still grinning around my globe

For testing I set CPU Idle to 51°C when SETIing @ 952 ... took about 3 minutes for a blue screen and instant reboot ...

                  Gee, this is fun

First of all, prior to this chip I ran a celery 300a @ 450 with retail hs/f for 1 year and 4 months, and it still works perfectly...just dont have a motherboard to put it in. As I said before, initially I ran it @ 2.3v, and eventually curtailed it to 2.1 stable as it burned in.

Now, my 3dmark scores. please keep in mind, this is a 16mb card, and im only able to overclock it to 139MHz. Shows how much your Pentium III is riding on its higher memory bandwidth, ive got my bus at 112 w/ 2-2-2 timings.

I'm not sure I understand your response Maggi. "it has to be rev 1.04 or higher", for what? I don't know what my MB rev is: I suppose that info is only available on the MB itself. I'll check it out the next time I extricate the PC and crack open the case. I bought the system around Apr/May last year.
I think my PIII/450 isn't supposed to OC higher than something like 500 MHz and it didn't seem worth the bother, especially since reliability is paramount. Its a Malaysian chip, batch 99071121, packed 02/21/99, S code SL3CC.
Looking at the ASUS site, the specs only talk about PII/450 as the max for the P2Bs. A post in their forums stated that the PIII/600 would work on all of the P2Bs (is this the fasted Katmai?). They also state that coppermines won't work at all. This apparently is their official position. Do you know otherwise?
Again reliability is paramount with me and I keep my systems forever. Normally, I'm more likely to buy a new PC rather than upgrade: This allows me to keep dedicated machines for servers, etc. An external SCSI box makes it easy to share among the PCs (and keeps the main box cooler). However, I'm interested in what my options are with the current MB and what is the most I can get out of upgrading this box via OCing or a CPU upgrade.

                          Two things:

one, are you running 3dmark99 or 2000? Im running 200, and im ranked 2nd in the same video class (didnt see your setup anywhere). A PIII w/ 133MHz bus beat me by a little (no surprise).

Two, I have better polygon rates and my high-detail scores are faster I have only matrox to blame for the pitiful overclockability of my video card

Haven't spent the Money on the Memory yet Maggie or the heatsink for that matter. I was hoping for a cheaper solution. (I'm a tight git at heart). I was also wondering what the lower amount of cache would do for my chess prog Fritz6 since that likes large fast caches. At the moment it plays nice and quick and kicks my ass fairly easly. Increasing the mega hertz will result in faster response still and even quicker defeats (Oh shucks).

                              Hi again ...

                              Xortam:

Yes I'm talking about the rev of the MoBo and it's printed directly onto the PCB right below that ASUS stamp.

According to Asus you'd have to have rev 1.04 or newer for the P2B-S board to get a Coppermine or FC-PGA Celeron running at all, but @ 1.8V I proved them wrong on my rev 1.02 P2B-S ... I'll try to find the proper links.

Note that my Cel566 uses a multiplier of 8.5 which is not even existant on the MoBo ...

                              MadCat:

                              obviously I ran 3D Mark 2000 ...
its predecessor didn't have a Helicopter or Adventure game, no 64MB texture rendering test etc.

I know that you have faster single results, you have a right for that on a higher priced CPU ...

                              I didn't know madonion would not store my entry - d'oh !

I meant the pricing of your CPU ...
It justifies your purchase, because you're still faster than my low priced Celly.

My PC is running on a Celeron 466 now, and becasue the perfomance is so bad I want to buy a new CPU. I was thinking about the Celeron II 533 or 566, but I want to be able to o/c to at least 700 mhz, else I won't notice any performance difference. Any advice on what CPU to buy and especially what cooling?
