  • Keep Goin McRhea, You'll be fine.
Listen to Jord or one of the other MURCers (Hi Alfie who have been following closely. You'll get a lot of GOOD advice, but let Jord or one of the others that goes back to the beginning of this monster tell you what the NEXT step is. The Post from The Pit is a good example. A wonderful 'One Pager' on a Windows reinstall that will serve you well later. You really ought to print it out (I am) Anyone who uses Uncle Bills OS has to do it. (Getting off topic here)

STEP BY STEP you're making progress.

    • A report on the hanging issue, although the system is set to disable PNP OS and the IDE channels are disabled in the BIOS, the system still hangs.
      Okay, fase two then.
(Print this out in case of an emergency!!)
      • Close Windows, reboot and go into the BIOS.
Enable both IDE controllers, save the BIOS and exit the BIOS. The PC will reboot again.
      • Let it run through until you're in Windows and it has detected both IDE-controllers (and possibly installed software for it, so keep your Windows CD in your CD-ROM drive.)
      • Post us your IRQ list
      • Shutdown Windows.
      • Open the case (if it's closed ), remove the IDE cable for the HDD from the Promise card.
If you have the new IDE cable already, use this one instead of the original IDE cable.
      • Look at the new flatcable. Do you see the red line on one side of the flatcable? This is the power. The flatcable must be inserted into the HDD with this red line pointing towards the power-connector.
      • Use the other end of the flatcable to connect it onto the Primary IDE port on the mobo.
Again, check that the red line is pointing towards the side on the mobo-connector where you see a little 1 above the connector.
      • Unhook the IDE cable of the CD-ROM from your Promise card and put it in the secondary IDE slot on the mobo, again lining the red cable with the 1.

      Done that?
      • Check on the backside of your HDD that it's jumpered Master. Use the first HDD (Single) to see if it's jumpered alright.

      • Then take a Philips screwdriver and unscrew the screw holding your Promise card. Take out the Promise card, you may need to use some force to do so.
      • Okay, so the only card's in your PC are now your PCI Winmodem and your G400 AGP, right?
      • Boot up your PC again.
      • Does the PC start up normally?? If not, go into the BIOS and set the drive to AUTO and the Mode to AUTO. Save and Reboot.
      • When in Windows, go into Device Manager and check if it's detected your CD-ROM. If not, set the Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Busmaster IDE controller to Both IDE Channels enabled. Windows will reboot again.
      • There's still some info about your Promise card residing in the registry and on your harddrive, so we must get rid of that.
Check in the Device Manager if the Promise is still listed. If it is, delete it. (the system might want to do a new reboot).
      • Goto your configuration screen, software and delete anything that seems to link to the Promise Ultra66.
      • Now reboot your PC one last time and check if it's still hanging.
      • Post us your new IRQ list.

      (Pffew )

      Jord.

P.S: If it's still hanging, ... Then I'll be back with another solution

      • Looks like we are getting down to basics here. So, while you are at it, delete the modem and take it out also. Then we will have the system as simplified as we c

an get it. From there, we can start rebuilding one step at a time and maybe find your problem.

        RAB

P.S. That is assuming you have a way to comunicate with us on another computer.

          • You guys are unbeateble.
My concern is with growth. You must grow to become one, to become whole, to become sane. I am not going to force sanity upon you. Rather, I am going to bring out your insanity. When it is pulled out completely, throw into the wind, sanity will happen to you, you will grow. You will be transformated. That is the meaning of meditation

            • First thing to try and do is try and identify
the problem. Someone has suggested earlier that machine isn't that old.

First question has it ever worked?

If not contact Gateway and send it back or try and get them to sort it out. I don't know what type of warrenties Gateway offer (They may do onsite).

If it did work then suddenly stop has any new software gone on any new hardware gone on.
If so that could be the problem. Uninstall the software and hardware and see what happens.

If theres been no new hardware/software and it did work then suddenly stop it suggests faulty equipment.

Finding that can be a long winded so my first suggestion re-installing windows would rule out some of the issues of new drivers being installed over old plus any strange software overwriting drivers and libraries with there own.

If it still crashes the best thing you can do is then remove all the extra hardware soundcards, Modem, Promise card and re-install windows again and see if it still crashes.

If it doesn't crash then re-install one card by card until the same fault crops up. Then hopefully bingo you found the problem. (Okay it maybe a hardware combination soundcard doesn't like promise etc).

If it still crashes with nothing in just the G400 your looking at faulty memory, dodgy cpu, dodgy motherboard even power supply.

By the way Sod law dictates it's the last thing you try.

Oh and if anyone has said some of this I'm sorry but this thread is so long it almost the lord of the rings of Murc.

                • Your record will be safe Jord. I'll be dead before we get CLOSE .

A Quote from Gateway's "Tech Support" (yeah, right!)

Many products for Gateway and its subsidiaries are custom engineered by our suppliers to Gateway specifications and may vary with similarly marketed products.

Could we need a different patch driver??

McRhea: Follow Jord's orders, he will tell you whether.

                  The Pit:

All pertinent answers to your question can be found by doing a search under Matrox Hardware on McRhea's handle. You'll find a couple of threads that merge into this one.

If you are a tech, you'll actually find it entertaining, but the backstory running here is that what you and Jord and the others may consider simple and logical is NOT to a newbie. We all assume too much. McRhea is learning, and the MURC is serving it's function.

To answer your first question, (has it ever worked?) Yes...briefly. If you want to know more, go back through the thread(s). If you do tech with real people you'll learn a lot about the fallacy of asumptions. Stay tuned and catch up.

And you're right about your last statement too. When we get there, (and we will) we will all hopefully enjoy a laugh over the hidden 5 minute solution. It always is.
