  • "Haig" Can you help please DvD probs!!

Hi I am experiencing a stutter when I watch dvd movies on my tv threw the dvd max D\h option. They dont happen all the time but periodically threw out the films I have watched.

I am using the win dvd 2000 player as I have found the picture quality to be superior to the Zoran "Cinemaster" player that came with the card, and BTW this problem still occurs when I used the default player.

Appart from this small problem I am amazed with the quality of the picture,I am running the image threw Gold plated Phono cables to my 25"Sony Pro-logic TV .

    G400 MAX
    P3 450 running at 630 mhz (140 fsb) 2.0v s-code SL35D Costa Rica (oem)
Alpha P3 125c Copper Embedded heatsink
    Abit BE6 Motherboard
128 mb pc 100 sdram (my lucky dimm)
    17.3gb Fujitsu h\d Udma 66
    21"Sony monitor
    SB Live Value
    Diamond Super Express 56i Modem
    Pioneer 10X DVD Drive
    Supermicro SC-750 full tower case
    Winblows 98 se

It also makes no difference if I run my cpu at default speed :P

So if you could help it would be much appreciated Regards Matt {:O)

    Hi Matt,

What default player are you talking about?

What titles are these and from what production houses are they from?

Is the stuttuer happening on the tv or on the Pc monitor or on both?

When there is the stutter, is your hd spinning?

Is DMA enabled for the dvd drive?

Are all tsr's closed when you play your dvd?

Do the stutters happen in even intervals?

If you are having the stutter problem with a few different softDVD apps, it's more likely to be a configuration problem somewhere in your system.

Next time you play a dvd title, keep the system monitor running and monitor the cpu ussage. Tell me what value this is when you get the stutter.

      Hi Haig :]

Thanks for your reply,Im starting to get a bit fedup with the problem :[

What default player are you talking about?
A:-The software dvd player that came with the Max [ZORAN] I think but it looks just like the Cinemaster player my bro has got.
What titles are these and from what production houses are they from?
A:-Godzilla [Columbia tristar] Matrix [?] Armageddon [?] sorry I borrowed these films!
Is the stuttuer happening on the tv or on the Pc monitor or on both?
      A:-Just the t.v
When there is the stutter, is your hd spinning?
A:- Not sure as the T.V. is downstairs and the P.C is up so I cannot watch them togeather!!!
Is DMA enabled for the dvd drive?
      A:-Yes
Are all tsr's closed when you play your dvd?
Q:- What do you mean by tsr's???
Do the stutters happen in even intervals?
      A:-No

All I can be sure of is that this does'nt happen when I watch DVD on my P.C

Haig I seem to have a problem with my sys monitor I will check again but the last time I looked at it it read 100% all the time.
I am looking for a non windows sys monitor to test with,Can you recommend one??

      Thank you Regards Matt {:O)

The DVD player that comes with the G400 is, in fact, Cinemaster. Not Zoran. That was the software that come with the G200...

And TSRs are programs running in the background (DOS based drivers, dodads running in your system tray, fastfind, virus checkers, etc...)
        Core2 Duo E7500 2.93, Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, 4gig 1066 DDR2, 1gig Asus ENGTS250, SB X-Fi Gamer ,WD Caviar Black 1tb, Plextor PX-880SA, Dual Samsung 2494s

You can identify TSR's by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete ONCE ONLY and writing down the list of programs running in the dark shadows of Windoze...they are the cause of many problems such as what you are describing. Try "end task" option on them (one by one) then doing Ctrl+Alt+Delete again and selecting the next, testing each time you close a program...you should look for virus checkers, diagnostic programs, other things that 'check in' on your system intermittently.

Post a list of these programs in the Ctrl+Alt+Delete window, and I bet you'll find your problem. Good Luck !!

Forgot! Leave "Systray" and "Windows Explorer" alone! Losing them can cause odd things to happen.

            Hi Matt,

Something's not right if your CPU usage is at 100% all the time with that kind of system.

Do what Bixler says and list all your tsr's.

We do have an issue with The Matrix where is will stutter every 20 minutes. If this is what you are getting, then we are looking into it with Ravisent.

You can also try windows resource meter instead of its sysmon.

I have a similar problem as Mathew.
I found out that it only occured when watching on the TV, when viewing the film on the monitor there are no stuttering.

The stuttering for me occures in intervals, like once every second. But they only occur when I play NTSC, region 1 DVD's on PAL out.
If i run a PAL, region 2 DVD there is no stuttering.

This must be a bug somewhere in matrox drivers and it's getting a bit annoying I must say. I thought this problem would go away when matrox released their new drivers but nooo.

I have tried to terminate all background programs but there is still stuttering.

I get the same stutter with DVDMax enabled on my G400. This happens with the default Matrox player (default Cinemaster/Ravisent engine). My tv-system is PAL (for Germany).
This happens regardless of the DVD watched.

                  I've tried (all Region 2):

                  *Interview with the Vampire
                  *Sense and Sensibility
                  *The Big Lebowski
                  *The English Patient
                  *The Matrix
                  *Shakespeare in Love

With DVDMax enabled, the picture has 'stutters' on the TV while it
                  hasn't those on the monitor...

                    Hey Matthew,

I'm no Matrox tech, but you have a bunch of stuff running in back ground. Closing most of these should help you out some.

Power strip - I'm not sure if you need this on all the time
Direct Control - Not sure what this is
Getright - Only need this when you're downloading
Rain - This is for "cooling" cpu's via software. I've heard it really don't help much.
ICQ - ***** This thing is a resource hog. Turn it off!
                    Systray - Leave this on!
                    Creative Launcher - Disable this
Pdesk - I would leave this.
CpuNumber - Don't know what this is.
Rnaapp ?? - I think you only need this when you're online.
Ahqtb ?? - Don't know what this is.

I don't know about you, but I'm usually not playing games or internet surfing when I watch DVD movies. So Disable everything except exploer, systray, and pdesk.

Also, you may try going to http://www.dvdutils.com They have a newer cinemaster engine than what's on the matrox disk. It works better for me, but some people say it works worse. You can always try it out and go back.

                    Hope this helps.

                      Hi Matt,

Those figures still seem high but it's probably due to all the stuff you have loaded up.

Do what SPSU suggested and see if this helps.

Override - What you are getting is normal. We won't support PAL to NTSC and vice versa.

The dvd app will not convert frame rates on the fly.

Gavin - How often are your stutters?
Are these titles specifically for region 2?

Little addition to Haig's comment on NTSC-2-PAL and vice versa:

NTSC is 30FPS, PAL is 25 FPS ...

When you try to playback a NTSC DVD on a PAL system, every 6th frame will be dropped/skipped to maintain 25FPS.

To avoid that phenomenon, you'd need a TV that supports NTSC with 30FPS, but those are a bit more expensive than the regular ones.

Hope this cleared a few misunderstandings ...

                            Maggi,

What is the quality like of your region 2 "Matrix" DVD - I've heard comments that some region 2 DVDs aren't as good quality as the region 1 versions and some don't have all the extras?

                            Thanks,

The reason why your System monitor is showing 100 % is probably because you run rain. Personally I haven't used Rain but the other prog called CPUidle, and the same thing happened to me too. though, the DVD ran just fine
