• Since they've started on it about 7 months ago and aparently the game engine itself is essentially done, because former id employees were allowed to see it,and acording to their comments,it easily beat the unreal tech demos that were shown a few months ago, especially the use of lights.

Actually the exact comment of one of them(american Mcgee)developer of alice, was more along the lines of "I had to pick up my jaw off the floor after seing it" type comments.

This is just a guess, but i think it's possible that a demo could be released before the end of the year.

• About the alleged specs: 3 pixels pipelines with 3 Texels per pixel at 200-250 MHz ? Where did you take them ? IXBT labs ? I hope not, as the first time they "leaked" NV20 (BTW, the real name will be GeForce 3... so much for originality!), it stated the NV20 was a 6 pixel pipelines, 3 textures per pixel (6x3) at 300 MHz (5.4 GigaTexels...) and 256 bits DDR SDRAM rated at 250 MHz (that would efectively more than double the Ultra's mem bandwidth), and we now know that the real specs are 4 pixels pipelines with 4 textures per pixels at 250 MHz (which give ONLY 4 GigaTexels per second...)and 250 MHz 128 bits, which is only slightly more than the Ultra's mem bandwidth...), so much of the speed gain will be through design optimization and HSR... Let'S get real: the only things we know is that the codename was Condor 2, and internal documents referred to an alleged G800 chip. Anything else is just pure speculation (well, most of it...) So, until some RELIABLE website (HardOCP, the whole MURC crew, Firingsquad, The Reg, SharkyExtreme, AnandTech and TomsHardware (about the two last ones: they might have been a little biased in the past, they very, VERY rarely post false rumors... So, the only things I can tell you right now is things I would like to see implemented in the G800: the ability to play games (current or near future games, like Giant and Halo; no one can play Giant with a G400 at more than 800x600@32bits and expect an acceptable framerate (more than 30 fps...) at 1600x1200@32bits with all eye candies maxed out, maybe 2x or 4x FSAA (although not as needed as this it is needed at lower resolutions...), as 2D+3D image quality as good as the G400, or even better, DualHead, and a price tag that will not require me to sell my soul to Satan or sell a kidney to Matrox online store...

As always, feel free to comment, as it appreciated, as long as it's positive...

• Anyways,no one knows for sure even the specs of the NV20 and even more so those of the G800.

What's for sure is that we should see the official release of the NV20 within the next month or two, assuming they follow through with their six month product scedule.

I sure hope that the G800 anouncement will really take place at this year's GDC,and i hope for matrox and for the sake of competition, that whatever they have coming will be able to go head to head with Nvidia's offering.

• Back to the whole Fusion issue. Perhaps you're all barking up the wrong tree.

Seeing as ATi, NVidia, and S3 all have integrated chipsets (i.e. graphics controller on a north bridge chip), could it be that Fusion is/was something similar? It would seem in keeping with Matrox's OEM bias. Seems to me that their big OEM clients would have been begging for something like this from Matrox. Good 2D, passable 3D, and DualHead...all on a north bridge controller.

But what do I know?

Wouldn't it be best for Matrox to release a card that is just like we like the Matrox cards to be? Innovative, new and upheaving?

Come on, ATi just copied stuff from Matrox, with another name, and say it's their own 'invention'

then ati came and made a product that almost matches the GF and is more an all round product (video in)
So? Should we worry?

so if matrox released a card that is good for gaming, but also has other features, they would slip into a gap in the market, because is not too succesful b/c of their drivers. usually cards that have video editing features have worse gaming performance (ati all-in-wonder, g400tv), so why not make a card that (almost or at least) matches GF in speed, outperforms it in image quality and features and driver support, AND appeals to the customers that are not ONLY, but ALSO into gaming and 3D.
To start with the last bit: You must mean gaming and 2D?

You can also ask nVidia and ATi to slip into the non-gaming market and see what they would do there. At least Matrox doesn't care too much about all those "every month a new card for I need more fps in my game" swappers. They just release a product, with good drivers to begin with - not the patch for the patch for the patch for the last drivers we released a week ago as some do - and add to those drivers, after which they become splendid. Even our BBz are some times flabbergasted at the drivers released, not because they thought they were the best, but because they are good enough for us all

and they should announce it soon or im gonna spend all my money on a radeon
Well, I guess it's bye bye then. If you feel the need to spend your money on what I think is an overrated card (and yes, I've seen it alive, and the demo looks good, yet demo's don't say the littlest thing about a videocard!!), then be my guest and go ahead.

It almost sounds like blackmail: "If you don't show me your new card soon, I'll cut off the ear of your daughter!!" ... Bah !!

Spend your bucks on your Radeon if you want to. You might regret it after some time. And do buy the 64Mb version

Geez, I hope not, a puking video card is just what the world needs. Stick to RSN.

I agree that the G400 was innovative for it's time, but before that? I don't see the trend, so far they are a one shot wonder.

New is easily accomplished, just get a card out the door.

I don't think it will be a matter of being like a Radeon or a Geforce for much longer, both feature sets are likely to become quite similar.

I think people here are going to be saying they will wait for the next next version of Matrox's upcoming going by the critiques they have of ATI and NVIDIA. The expectations are really way too high considering the state Matrox is in with fewer engineers, uncertain focus, etc. The amount of time doesn't indicate an upcoming miracle, just bad luck.

What about the original Millennium? That was head and shoulders above anything else for years Two shot wonder!

Errm, I might've better used uplifting. Yet, for all the other videocard makers out there it will be upheaving

"Shit, now we have to copy Matrox again, and find something new to call it "made by us""

• didnt want it to sound like a threat to matrox or anything. ive been waiting for the g800 (condor/condor2 (why would it be called condor 2 if theres never been one before)/fusion or whatever its called since i saw the first rumor, and i am beginning to get, well not disappointed, rather something like sad, depressed, feeling down...
when im not choosing the right words thats because im not a native english speaker (although i think im rather good), and still a student.
except for 3dfx (which i used with the first mystique) and a tnt borowed from my brother ive been using matrox since i built my computers myself, and i dont like the idea of getting something else, but there will come a time when i feel the need to get a new card, and when matrox hasnt announced a card by then i shall have to wait a couple of months more till they announce something but if they dont announce something till, lets say end 2001 ill consider another card, sad as it may be
