  • This isn't just a shameless revival of this big thread! I genuinely want to know:

What is volumetric rendering? Is it just regular 3D? Xortam asked I believe but never got an answer.

And September 11th is approaching so hold tight people - and ride the Matrox rollercoaster!

    Paul.

            • Well just to add my 0.02$

I think we are all expecting to much from Matrox because we are pissed for not providing a GeForce rival.
I believe G800 won't be so revolutional as we would like it to be and as many of you tried to imply with voxel rendering and stuff that is way in the future IMHO.
As Jorden stated after that post from Ant with mother & bored used in obviously strange manner, what we will get from a Fusion card is simply a chip for MBO manufacturers to use with their products.
F800 could be the standard solution (like we already have today) and the Fusion plus could allow the MBO user some sort of upgrade possibilities (more memory or something).
Think about it. It would suck for us Matroxmaniacs, but it would definitely bring loads of money to the Holy Halls Of Matrox.
The reason I believe this to be true, is that it would be a strange marketing move by Matrox to change the name of something already established with the G-100,200 and 400. If Coca-Cola launched a new flavor with, i don't know, more sugar in the drink, would the new drink be called Sweet-OH or Coca-Cola Something? That's the same reason Dualhead won't be called Fusion.
Maybe I am completely wrong here but I am certain Fusion doesn't stand for any new feature the chip will have.

I hope someone can make some sense out of this post, because I lost it, darn!

              • i understand what your saying, Goc

but if the G800 and the F800 are going to be the same chip there both going to be crappy.
because an intergrated chip has to use the systems memory speed which is much slower then this (DDR)FCRAM or even DDRSDRAM they say is going to be used on the video card boards.
but if the F800 were to have all the features of a G800 (or even a G400 or G450) but be clocked down/less pipelines (like the Geforce MX) then that would make sence.
with this not only would Matrox have a chip to compete with the value market (as a seperate board) but also a chip that could be intergrated onto mobo's like GOC said. and then they would leave the G800 being the highend board. the G800plus could be a G400max kinda thing. unless it's a F800plus then i don't know.
                no harm, no foul.

                • Just a quick thought....

If we guess that Matrox' new card will have some new features that will need DirectX 8, and won't be released until DX8 is out, it could be out soon....

I just spoke with my brother who works at MS in their Games group, and he said DX8 is set to be released fall 2000, probably this month.

Who knows? (Obviously Matrox does... )

                  • i think that releasing the G800 around the time DX8 came out was Matrox's original plan.
i just remember some news about how "Matrox's next-generation graphics card" will be released the same time as DX8, which was suppost to be mid-Augest
                    no harm, no foul.

                      • It´s alive alright. This "G800" thing.

And by the time it´s out we all will be playing Quake 23 on our G400:eds....at 2 fps.

                        • According to Carmack Doom 3 will run slowly on Geforce 2's even in lower resolutions so...I can't image how slow it would run on a G400.

                          • Does it matter how Doom3 will run on a G400? By the time it is released, you can play it on your G800 or even newer generation Matrox board.

                            • Yea Right! Matrox is too slow in this section of the industry to have released two cards by the time the latest Doom game comes out. I'm using a AIW Radeon and the drivers aren't as stable as my G400 was but it looks just as good. Did I mention it performs about twice as fast in all my applications. (Mastercam, Shopcam, Autocad 2000, Games, etc etc)

Matrox needs a card that will be substantially faster than an NV20. Have you seen the aledged spec? OH MY!
