The one thing that is sad is that matrox putting low priority on openGL if the enterview stuff is real. That explains some bugs like lightning in openGL haven't been fixed. Some say this is because of the G400 limited 3D ability.

The part about Matrox G400 max being slow when it first came out was due to drivers, unfortunatly the 3D drivers were really marginal at best and couldn't pump out the full power of card.

One thing that is good about matrox drivers except for the occassional crashing once every few months, is that it has the best drivers for directX I have seen in windows 2000.

Well we'll all see in a few weeks how much truth there is to all of this

Look what i found over at www.voodooextreme.com , might be something, might be nothing, i dont know

"Voodoo Extreme - Are you going to take advantage of some of the new bells and whistles we've heard so much about with the GeForce III (or, rather, DX8)?

Jake Simpson - As Id engines are all OpenGL based, I doubt we will be using many DX8 features We are working with nVidia to use some of the newer features of their cards, as well as with ATI and Matrox. We don’t want to depend on any specific feature though because who knows what the market penetration these newer cards will have at the time of release?"

frankymail wrote "the G550 card WILL be a hit... same target as the G450 (OEM contracts) but with more than the double of the G450 performance"

double performance of the G450, eh? So, that means the G550 will be as abou as fast as an overclocked MAX?

          Topha

I think it´s a sign. He sais something about new cards while mentioning Matrox in the same phrase.

          It´s definitely a sign.

my guess is that the "3d king" part has somthing to do with the rumors "that matrox has solved the bandwidth problem", I think it was from a plan update from id software.
Or perhaps he is talking about the
matrox GPUN,(from the console), that would be a "3d king"
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

I agree. And what comes those "GPUN" specs, there is only one sollution to make those fillrates possible... and that's eDRAM.

                    Hi,
The G550 is -RUMORED- to start at 200MHz... with =< 166MHz 128 bits DDR SG/SDRAM. given it has two pixels pipelines, two textures per pixels. Thats 400 Mpixels/sec, 800 Mtexels/sec. The MAX offers 300 Mpixels/sec, but 300 Mtexels/sec... The G550 should not be TWICE as fast as the MAX because the MAX used 200 MHz SGRAM and the G550 will most probably have 166MHz DDR memory, which roughly equals in 300 MHz SG/SDRAM, due to latency and other efficiency issues... The G550 -SHOULD- be about %80-90 faster than the MAX in most 3D situations (but it could be better in heavier scenes) so about 2-2.5 times faster than the G450 32 MB DDR.

However, please consider the fact that I do NOT have a G550 in my possession (though I wish I would... ) and my numbers are based on the G550 alleged specs VS G400/MAX/G450 specs and numbers...

                    Francis,

The Kyro core scales much better than standard architectures, if I'm not mistaken.

Muted: What did you want to say? That the Gxx0 won't scale that good or that it will scale better?

It's still a standard architecture, unlike the Kyro's.

If the G550 is limited to 2 pipelines it will be somewhere in between the MX and the GTS as the GTS will have twice the fillrate, but the G550 will not be as bandwidth limited as the MX.
A 2 pipe G550 would be a big disappointment to me, as it would IMHO only be slightly faster than a overclocked G400Max, unless Matrox has some kind of Hidden Surface Removal up their sleeve.
