Just Remember, Matrox doesn't let info to be leaked unless they want it to.

Maybe along with the new card Matrox is going to start playing hardball. Leaking out info about their new card just as GF4s are hitting the street.

            Bit Boys you say!!

As long as we are speculating that the Bitboys Oy might have something to do with this, Mark over at VIAhardware posted this a few days ago:

            ________________________________
Some of you may have heard of this mysterious company. A couple of years ago, they boasted a claim that their video chipset would severely choke the competition. A few weeks ago, I dropped by the site out of curiosity. It had been down for a few months, and being the guy I am, I tend to check back now and again. This time, they had contact information listed, so I emailed them to inquire about future products. Thought I'd share the details with our readers.

            Mark,

Thank you for your interest in Bitboys. We are very excited about our prospects in the high end gaming market and are looking forward to getting our first part. As such, we are not talking a lot about specifics on the part or timeframes. As you can imagine, there are many out there who share your view of wanting a new player in the 3D graphics market and we plan to make our presence felt in a big way. But until we have working silicon in house, we are keeping pretty quiet. If you have questions about information we have on the website or on our opinion of 3D gaming and the market, I'd be glad to answer any of those. Thanks, again, for your interest and I look forward to hearing back from you.

VP - Marketing & Business Development
            Bitboys, Inc.

While the response was fairly general, there is some good information. First off, we can be sure that they do NOT have any silicon chips in production at this point. On the other hand, they seem to be dedicated. According to the website, they recently were given a grant to continue research. I must admit, their ideas are very fresh and appealing. Bitboys claims that the true bottleneck in video performance is memory bandwidth and I tend to agree. Instead of looking at more expensive solutions such as DDR, they are working on changing the way information is stored. Using cheaper SDRAM, they claim to be able to outperform any current solution on the market. That's quite a claim and one I'd truly like to see. Anybody in their right mind should agree.
            _____________________________

A grant? could this be from M?
No silicon? The wait might be longer than we think

They might officially anounce the cards relatively soon, but if matrox follows their standard practice, they won't be available for purchase for at least a couple more months after the anouncement itself....

Of course, they're welcome to surprise us...

In any case,i'll be looking closely at the new card once it's available and compare it to upcoming DX9 cards from both Nvidia and ATI and see which is the best overall card for me....
              note to self...

Assumption is the mother of all f***ups....

              Primary system :
P4 2.8 ghz,1 gig DDR pc 2700(kingston),Radeon 9700(stock clock),audigy platinum and scsi all the way...

Wow, been a while. I'll agree this card does sound a little like the bitboy's version, but seriously, any card that had eDRAM will.. That's the important part, other new 'features' not seen on other high-end cards will be because of the eDRAM.

Another thing: 512(bit memory bus)/8(bits per byte) *300(mhz)=19.2 GB/s Coincidence?
(I remember a lot of number games with the G800 too, this is fun)

the bitboy part was supposed to have a 1024 bit bus, so this would indicate the M part is a different chip...

This is exciting though, I truly hope above all the timeframe is right.. if it is and there's no other delays, people will start saying there's 3 competitors in the video market again...

I'll give you a hint... it won't have eDRAM

Well if it doesn't have Edram, then the only other alternatives in order to hit nearly 20 gig/sec of bandwith is to either have a 256 bit wide bus between the graphics chip and main memory using roughly 300~325 mhz DDR sdram....it's possible but very expensive to implement(extra pins of the graphics chip, extra traces on the pcb, timing problems, memory granularity issues,etc...).

Or use a different type of memory altogether that's much faster than DDR sdram(QDR sdram?) and keep the bus at 128 bits, which is way easier to implement anyhow....although as far as i remember, faster memory types are still in development so it'll be awhile before we see them(DDR II,etc...).

Quick question though, are we talking actual memory bandwith that's always there regardless if the chip has any bandwith saving features,or is that effective bandwith....?.

I'm all excited, but all I'm really after is a Matrox card with GF3 performance. Not too many can afford $300+.

Then buy a GF3. You will not be pleased with the money required to purchase my extra abilities, and the picture will be too clear for your GF3 loving eyes to handle.

G400Max was a toy. I am the real deal. Just like my father, Millenium.

If you want affordable and performance, go take an ATI. If you want it all, I have what you want.
