It`s not just the Dutch ... in German you HAVE to hear/read the whole sentence before you can understand what it means. Sometimes that`s not that easy ... try reading Thomas Mann in German, and then translating it, preserving his style ( of a half-a-page sentences ).

I cant believe i havent seen the button! I mustve, but never paid any attention to it. Thanks, Holly.

PS. BTW, i didnt think i should enable Spell Check in my browser, just thought thered be a checkbox for it. You know, to auto(matically) check for spelling errors before the post was submitted. Give me some credit ...

PPS It IS correct to write wouldnt. Is the apostrophe at the right place?

I honestly don't know about Europe, but Australia now requires a 4 year university degree to become a teacher (3 years for adult education) and you need to take electives in the subjects you want to teach. Currently Australia has a glut of teachers (thanks to the govt. cutting back spending) and a number of my friends are currently teaching in the US because of the cry for more/good teachers (from memory there mostly in Texas).

          Dan

Any other Australians out there if my facts are wrong please correct me, but this was the way it worked at least in my state

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

My comments were based on the direction the thread took. I have no idea why you decided that they were all directed at your first post. After all we are going into three pages now, and your initial request was not that extreme. If it were, I would have said a lot more than I did on the first page.</font>
Thanks Scomp. I cannot direct the direction any of my threads is going, although I try to comprehent what is being said. And the schoolbus thing for America has always somewhat interested me. Do I have an answer for that by now? Somewhat

I have an idea, since Jorden and Holly are such experts on the English language, it's usage, and etiquette, how about we just email them all of our posts first. Then they can screen and edit them and post them for us, how does that sound?

Actually, it wasn't very difficult at all to get into this school. I scored way above the cut-off score, almost 50 points above it. I'm surprised at the amount of idiots in this school.

I guess the fact that we learn all this - algebra, foreign languages e.t.c. just to pass the classes and tests, and then forget about it, is true. I have found little use for much of the stuff they make me learn. Though, I managed to translate some of a Spanish post on another forum. Other that that, I don't think I've ever used Spanish outside the classroom.

That is only because you truly don't know what we are talking about. We're not talking about children who have a choice here. We are talking about those that don't have a choice and are shipped clear across town when there is a perfectly good school just around the corner. The bussing issue we are talking about was implemented as a way of trying to comply with a federal desegregation mandate (if that is what you want to call it).

                  Joel

PS Please excuse me if I made any grammatical errors. I'm just a poor, southern, uneducated, white boy who thinks his cousin looked real good in those jeans last night.

You obviously see yourself above all the other MURC members, I mean you seem to think you have mastered the English language and all.

I see that you have not posted here often but if you will look around you will see that we don't tend to be too fond of personal insults. So please try to refrain from doing so in the future.

                            • I haven’t posted in this thread yet because criticizing someone for something at which you yourself are far from perfect is an excellent way to make you look stupid.

I can’t help though but to mention that I find it interesting to observe how people from a specific nation write English.

Japanese and Chinese often write with a perfect spelling; only they are using words no one would ever use, with their grammar totally wrong, so in the end it’s very hard to make sense of anything they wrote.

German people writing English has this annoying but understandable tendency to string words together, or at the very least use a hyphen. A word processor becomes a word-processor, a wordprocessor, or even a Wordprocessor. A ZIP archive becomes a ZIP-Archive. It’s very commendable that most of the German posters here on the MURC are free from this.

Jorden has this very weird kind of English while Holly writes perfectly good American English as many others here, which really are a joy to read.
Actually it's hard to pinpoint a specific word or structure now which makes a post Jorden-like. In the past it was easier, for he was fascinated with the use of this “for” structure all the time. I think it comes down to his often unusual choice of punctuation and grammatical structures now that his posts seem so strange.
