I don't intend to know the US law.
But a few months ago someone's computer was taken by the police because some girl complained that he harassed and threatened her on-line. The police went through his computer, got all his logs and history and took him to court.

Seriously I couldn't ever do a dumb thing like that. In fact something similar to this happened to me when i was a newbie with computers and didn't know much about them. I was one of those inspiring novelists (still am ) and some dude that called himself The Matrix took all of my doc files and said he was going to copy my work and sell it. I was only 17 and scared out of my mind when i saw it (I mean this was the first year I had used the internet and that our school had it, and my first year that I owned my own little ol' laptop that I still have today). I never figured out who did it, but I gotta say I was angry.

If you know who it is Liz, bust his ass cause you should have enough info to get him. But if you don't know who it is (which was what I thought) then there usually isn't much that can be done. I just had to count my losses and go on.

Anyway, I haven't seen anything I wrote in someone else's name yet, so it must have just been a cruel prank. Let's hope that's all it was.

I belive the best thing you could've done (probably could still do, not sure if it's safe if the system's compromised now) was to archive and password your "sensitive" material. Choose some long (10+) combination of letters and numbers for the password and be done with it.
I mean, look at poor Zokes still trying to crack that zip file from some game CD

Unfortunetely (or fortunetely in your case) he's right and if you use different caracters it makes it even harder to crack. A password using all 256 caracters at 10 digits+ can take over 1 year to crack using a Athlon 1.333GHz.

I gave up on that project btw.

Well if you saw what she posted at that time it could have made him think that there was more on her system. Those who saw it know what I'm talking about.

Edit: I'm not saying it was one of us (the regulars). What was posted was a link that anybody could have clicked on. And the more I think about it, there could have been someone that gave him that link, someone from MURC who saw it at that time. Then again, I could be way off. I dunno.
