Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Twenty years ago, when I was a teacher, parents were big on their "rights", but kinda vague on the "responsibilites" thing.
I don't think it's changed much sence then.

          • Democracy is a Greek invention, but neither the US or the UK are a democracy. They are both a republics based off the Roman empire before the Ceasars took power.

The US Constituion merely defines the basic governmental structure and the basic laws of the land. Specific laws geared for the current issues are created as federal law, state law, county law and city law (in that order of power) to meet more specific needs, with the constitution as the final say. So certain laws are easy to change or add, others are not, and for good reason.

As for required service, I think it's a great idea. I served a 2-year mission for my church in Denmark, and it was a wonderful experience. My entire outlook on life and work ethic changed for the better. A mandatory 1-2 year military or civil service would be good to get a lot of the lazy youth (and I'm not an old geezer) off the street and into productive roles.

            Just my thoughts.

              sure.

here in austria, every male has to complete military service or do equivalent social work.

the problem is that too many want to go the "social work" way. therefor, the government tried to make it less attractive:

military 9 month, social work 12 month & nearly unpaid (as in some ¤/day, not enough to life on). social work abroad - development aid, "gedenkdienst" (holocaust-memorial-sites worldwide) will take 14 month. this usually happens at the age of 18.

one year is not that much for a "pupil" before he starts to work & earn money. but quite often persons are drawn-in at misstimed dates and therefor loose another year before they can start to study. for someone who entered the job-world before the situation is even worse - regarding income, paying for the flat, family...

additional problems arise sometimes when there are not enough places for social work: you get on a waiting list. if you want to work in the meantime, you won't get a real job - because everybody knows that you will be drawn in.

what have I done? I was rejected for the moment (health related) but will most likely have to serve in 2005 or later. every recrut will serve at the EU-border, with orders to kill people smugglers if threatened. that's something I cannot do or justify because of my upbringing.

other reasons: despite the first basic training military service is mostly boring & useless. quite a lot recruts weigh more after the 9 months than before.

therefor, I will do social work, if possible, abroad. chances are good - my education as a "food engineer" / chemist should be helpful.

I know the situation is even "worse" (from my point of view) in other countries (greece - 2years of service?).

Chuck....lost me there....the parents or the students? I know of alot of parents that aren't resposible and it reflects on their kids. I don't think that Mil service changes that all that much either...from my experance in the past 10 yrs. I knew penlty of people who got in over their heads with shit while in the army.

OMG the Europeans acually will kill something for the first time in 50 years?

This comment wasn't directed at Wulfman at all...just the general European feeling I get at times when it comes down to something like this

                    • Greebe, what ever you might think Democracy was a British invention as we had Parliament before the state of America and your constitutional rights existed Secondly Democracy is not for geeks, it's for those who actually have brains and want to have some freedom as everthing is proven to fail at that ie Fascism/Dictatorship etc
Oh constitutional rights work do they, well what about the case of firearms where ppl can legally walk around with and shoot each other
Oh what a great Military the USA has, well if I remember rightly the main war you fought alone you lost ..hehe
                      Little Britain had an EMPIRE!

Er, ain't the UK a constitutional monarchy? I know it means very little, but I am pretty sure that we are not a republic.

And with regards to law - someone can no doubt remind me - but IIRC the UK is based on a case-law system, most of Europe on statute law, and the US is like the UK with the happy happy constitution thrown in for good measure. Or am I confused (lawyer-girlfriend not around to tell me!)

Edit: oh and 3dfx - suggest you tone it down a bit before pissing off some of the good ol' boys around here

                              nah, depression.

our army is something to laugh about, too bad you haven't heard the discussions about if we need new pursuit planes or not. we are still running some old saab draken and are now out of spare parts (disassembling some to repair the others). therefor we should buy new ones, but different political parties are opposing that.
