Ah, nothing beats the rush of pulling the front wheels off the ground, looking at sky for about a second, laying them (hopefully gently) back on the ground, and then hammering the shifter a few times, to be greated at the end of the 1/4 mile with a time slip telling you that all that time you spent tuning and tinkering gave you and extra couple miles an hour and a tenth or so of a second.
And the best part - it took you only 10 seconds to achieve this satisfaction.
Oh yah - and you only get to see those rice-burners in the rear view mirror.
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

I used to enjoy the feeling of asking a passenger if they wanted to go, listen to "sure!", and then out of the corner of my eye see them get a really tense face as we went screaming up to the red line in 2nd gear. Big horsepower in a light car is a serious rush!

Never drove one, but I get the idea that accelerating as fast as possible in an M5 in 2nd gear would be less exciting (although very fast). All the sound proofing and luxury feeling just wouldn't be the same to me.

Reaching back here, back to the mid and late '70's. There used to be a US 30 Drag Strip in Hobart, Indiana, that had a co-driver day once a year. As long as the passenger seat was securely bolted down in the car and they had the proper safety equipment (helmet, seat belt, fire jacket) you could take someone with you for a ride. I had a four speed, big block C Gas Camaro at the time that ran low 10's. It was fun seeing the expressions of some of my passengers once the car was stopped. Some would yell through the whole run.

On my last street car, I had a 750 HP big block and used a 3.5" (88.9mm) Dr. Gas crossover exhaust system. His mufflers gave the car a very rich, throaty tone. The X style crossover works throughout the entire RPM range and I picked up a tenth of a second over open headers. Mixing the pulses of both banks tones down the exhaust noise too. Those who are familiar with NASCAR might have heard of Dr. Gas.

I've driven in many different drag racing classes, from 13 seconds down to low 7's at 198MPH. To me, the best rides for sensation of speed are with automatics or air shifters. Working a manual trans shifter or pulling the lever of a lenco takes some of the attention away from the ride.

the problem with new cars is that they don't have bench seats. How do you snuggle without bench seats?
