    • Ant, are you refering to the 76M transistors?
      main system: P4 Northwood 2.0 @ 2.5GHz, Asus P4PE (LAN + Audio onboard), 512MB Infineon PC333 CL2.5, Sapphire/BBA Radeon 9500@9700 128MB (hardmodded), IBM 100GB ATA-100, 17" Belinea (crappy), and some other toys...ADSL (1,5mbit/s down, 256kbit/s up...sweeeeeet!)

        • Goddamnit Ant, you just got your Parhelia yesterday and now you've counted the transistors on the sucker? You sure have been burning some midnight oil there ;-)

          It would of course be cool for Matrox if 3DLabs used their design, and they would avoid some serious competition that way. But I don't think this will be the case, because 3DLas stated that they will also sell graphics chips to other manufacturers.

          Then again, the new 3DLabs chip is said to have a new design and outstanding quality and scalability, so what do I know...

          • 3DLabs was probably smart to sell out while they still had some market value. Check this out from their Q4, 2001 results;

            "Total revenues for the fourth quarter of 2001 were $10.1 million compared to the $20.1 million reported in the third quarter of 2001. The Company reported a loss from operations (excluding inventory reserves and one-time charges) of ($6.2) million compared to earnings from operations of $9 thousand in the third quarter of 2001."

            Sounds like they were hemorraging pretty badly and it was getting worse.

            In addition they had borrowed $4 million in December and another $10 million in January. That's about 8% of the companies $170 million value, and if you annualized the increasing loss and loan curves they'd be getting close to worthless before the end of the year.

            Any bets that $14 million came from Creative?

              Well to be quite honest,that's pretty much the transistor budget that upcoming graphics chips built on 0.13 will roughly have(mentioned it several posts back btw)..

              So more than ever,should be an interesting 3 way fight Between Matrox,ATI and Nvidia this coming fall,when they all release their 0.13 micron DX9 parts.....

                Quite likely, Creative had a peice of the cake prior to the buy-out.

                        • * Start Wild Speculation *

                          In terms of leaked specs, Matrox's new super-card may have a slight edge on the ATI R300 (dev by ArtX team) - but probably not in how much it'll cost the end-user. Trailing the leaked specs pack is nvidia's gf5 - which will probably cost at least as much as Matrox's graphics solution.

                          * End Wild Speculation *

                          I'm all for Matrox taking back the lead - I currently enjoy the G400+RT2500 at work (usability lab) and kinda miss my old G200 (currently running an ATI 8500LE).

                          • I think that all these upcoming cards will be pretty impressive specification wise,so for the most part,it'll depend mostly on the drivers themselves to see who comes out on top...

                              What if the new spiffy card ( G1,000,000 ) is something odd like a 64bit PCI card running at 66mhz?
