• ok now that the MMC aka parhelia aka my next card is on the horizon, time for some more speculation

first of all overall recommended overall system speed. will 1Ghz be enough? i think yes. mark rein said that UT2003 f.e. will run fine on any P3. it really is about the graphics card.

next thing: cooling/noise, oc'ing. is it already manufactured in 0.13? if yes it will probably be a hell of an overclocker. i hope though passive cooling will be sufficient for standard clock rate, i am extremely sensitive to noise. if it comes with one of these high pitched little GPU fans i am gonna get mad. that is no problem during gaming of course, time to build in another fan regulator i guess.

I have a strong feeling about this... that it will be Dx8.1 card with few DX9 things and with best performance...

DX9 isn't needed anything over half a year... SiS, for example, has DX9 chip in their roadmap, but it is coming in spring 2003...

so DX8.1 with few DX9 featrues will be enough for me. DX9 shaders will take large amount of transistors and I think Matrox could have something better use for that...

and I think Matrox comes up with DX9 part (updated parhelia core, like G200 -> G400) in next year.
I have the same feeling about this. but i also expect the parhelia to be the fastest card, maybe even faster than some of the upcomming dx9 cards from the competion (at least in dx8 games ).

and yes the parhelia core will probably be rehashed again and again (and again and...) for the next 3 years, (maybe only 2 if they don´t screw up like the g800) this seems to be matrox bussines model.
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

• Hi,
I guess I don't quite belong here, since I'm not THAT concern about ability of running some (not even released yet) games, faster then some other people with different (not even released yet) graphic adapters.
Yes, I am waiting for new Matrox card but what I really want to see is not just 3D speed (nVidia approach)... I hope Parhelia (or whatever they'll call it) will bring major improvements in other fields. Hey, I care about driving my secondary monitor at 1600 x 1200 @ 32 bpp @ 85 Hz more than I care about my frame count in UT 2003.
What I'm trying to say is that I hope Matrox will not forget what was the main reason people were choosing in the past their adapters over some others. After all I'm quite sure that no matter how great Parhelia will be, few months after its release nVidia will introduce something even faster. After that, what are going to differ Parhelia from crowd will not be frame rate in UT 2003 but its (hopefully) quality, reliability and general usability in every day computer usage.

Cheers,
SB

P.S.
I don’t mind kicking some asses in UT 2003 either (1600 x 1200 @ 32bpp, all eye-candy on).

why else do you think we are MURCers?
i could have some shiny GF3 in my computer playing the latest and greatest games with 1600x1200 and have crappy 2D at the same resolution and other things i do not like. many have waited since the first g800 speculation and did not buy anything else (or did and dumped it shortly after) because of their loyalty to matrox. you can now hug each other
and it seems we get rewarded at last!

This is the sort of thing I'm hoping for from Matrox - the eye-candy thing. They already do 2D images better than anyone else, so rather than simply have FASTEST 3D card, I'd really love to see a Matrox card that DoESN'T HAVE eye-candy - meaning that the image produced by the card is so good to begin with that things like FSAA and whatever are simply irrelevant. That would truely be fitting for Matrox.

hmm!

i see several posibilities here:

1. the card is so screamingly fast, that you can´t disable fsaa and anisotrpic filtering (they didn´t bother to make it an option in the drivers)

2. they have been working on sub-pixel accuracy in the rasterizer or something like that.

3. they have developed a type of fsaa with no performance hit, so its just enabled all the time, in the bios.

4. or something else i can´t think of.

any ideas...?

I think 2. is most likely.

i have heard that it is possible on a tiler, i would be pleasantly suprised if the parhelia was a tiler, but i would be very suprised if that was the case.

maybe thats what the insane bandwith is for: fsaa, but wouldn´t that need higher fillrate as well.

or perhaps they have a post-filter unit, as a co-processor, that does the fsaa.

i don´t know, just wild guesses...

nappe1, sometimes i have the feeling that you know more about the parhelia the me (both from your post at murc but also from your posts at beyond3d), care to share you knowledge.
