If you were serious about preventing personal insults (not just mild warnings with no teeth), you would have deleted Gurm's verbal abuse. You instead let it remain unedited.

Joel, if someone personally insulted like you in that way, I believe you would have deleted the message immediately. But by allowing it to remain undeleted, you gave your tacit approval. That is unfair.

It's not what you say, but what you do Joel. Deleting Gurm's comments would have showed you meant what you said. I think we see enough words from politicians and lawyers to know that words just do not add up to much without being backed up by action.

                        • No, not agony or outnumbered. I can handle myself just fine.

I think you folks need to get off the war or battle metaphor, it is a a tad over-dramatic for what is only a dialogue. Reason over passion is more useful in conversation but due to the tic-tac nature of these written messages it is very difficult to catch spontanous progressions and insights. This, I admit adds to misunderstandings and flare ups in this forum but nonetheless...

If you get off on developing this chat into some kind of "battle/competition", you are missing the point entirely. I suggest you try online roleplaying games to indulging any overkill fantasies you need to explore.

I have made my case - and clearly; hitting defensless children is not something I support for any reason. You are free to justify it any way you like, but I'll just leave spanking to passionate and consenting adults. Children are just a little too vulnerable, and I am not that quick at losing my temper (but I seem to have a talent in tapping into sensitive and weak spots in some fellow Murcers). I concede it takes a lot of effort to raise a difficult child, but no one said it was a cakewalk. Perhaps a hamster would be less aggravating for some people, and then work up to something as complicated as a puppy.

And I really appreciate your desire to keep this topic going and waiting for my comments. Makes me feel validated, despite what you say otherwise

Everyone have a nice weeked, I am off fishing - some early chinook are showing up....I wonder if this will still be topic #1 on Monday

I think it was the question about the hot stove.

                            • Anticipate that any child will eventually be curious about a stove; then put the stove on low heat so he does not burn but hot enough for him to notice.

Let the child learn from the mistake, rather than from a beating. Just be a creative and anticipative parent. Start with hamsters, work up to puppies and so on...it is not the child's fault that a parent lacks creativity. Plus by the example of a creative solution the child just might start to learn and be creative in problem solving versus violence as a solution.

                              ok...the fish are waiting

                              • It's worse than I feared. Rather than teaching the child how to avoid the dangers of life, you want to remove the dangers. Eventually, the real world will hit that child like a freight train. Or, you're one of those people that expects me to sanitize and safety-scissor my entire life in case your child gets "curious" (read: "stupid") and decides to jump the fence into my backyard.
